Tom Mulherin’s high school hockey crystal ball
If flipping the page on the calendar into February didn’t already make the anticipation of winter state tournaments palpable, the final week of January that Hockeyland showed us sure did.
We were one game shy of a perfect week in the crystal ball. One. And you should know by now that it’s not about the one loss we had, either.
Highlighted by five ties, two overtime winners and a game-winner with 7.7 seconds left in regulation (congrats, Westwood), 14 of the 15 games previewed in last week’s crystal ball were decided by a goal or less. The only outlier was the Bishop Stang girls’ win over Arlington Catholic, which was a 3-1 game.
That means across 15 of the best matchups in Hockeyland last week, the total goal differential was 11. Truly absurd (but awesome).
League titles are in the balance this week, as are the Ed Burns Coffee Pot Tournament’s two championships on Sunday. We have two matchups between the MIAA power rankings’ top-two teams in their divisions. Red-hot teams collide. Unbeatens are tested. And, once again, a litany of rematches are on the docket.
This could be another wild week:
LAST WEEK’S RECORD: 9-1-5
OVERALL RECORD: 67-27-12
AVERAGE MARGIN: 1.90 goal differential
**WINNERS in ALL-CAPS**

WEDNESDAY
Middleboro/Carver/Wareham at NORWELL, 5:20 p.m. – The last matchup between the top two teams in the South Shore League title race finished with a 1-0 win for the Sachems (11-1), and Norwell (10-4-1) hasn’t lost in five games since. The Clippers trail unbeaten Middleboro/Carver/Wareham by just two points in the title race, and they have a big week ahead with another matchup against Abington (9-6) on Saturday. The Sachems could seal the league title here with a win.
NAUSET at Falmouth, 7 p.m. – Few teams have been able to get to defending Div. 3 state champion Nauset (13-1-2). The Clippers (12-3-1) are one of them. A 4-4 tie with the Warriors is part of Falmouth’s eight-game unbeaten streak, while Nauset is on a 14-game stretch itself. Battle of Div. 2 and Div. 3 title contenders.
Xaverian at CATHOLIC MEMORIAL, 7 p.m. – Once again, the Catholic Conference title race comes down to the last night of conference play. St. John’s Prep swept these two last week to set up a potential three-way tie for the crown, needing to beat Malden Catholic and for Xaverian (13-3) to win this matchup. CM (13-2-1) won this head-to-head 5-0 last time, though, and can seal the outright title with a win or a tie. Oh, and this is a battle of the top two teams in the latest MIAA Div. 1 power rankings.
FRIDAY
ARLINGTON at Reading, 7:25 p.m. – Top-10 teams face off in what will likely be a strong playoff atmosphere. Reading’s (11-2-2) only loss in league play came 4-0 to the Spy Ponders (11-4), aided by two empty-net goals. Arlington has just one league loss itself and could gain some separation in the Middlesex League Liberty title race.
SATURDAY
Pembroke at SCITUATE, 5:30 p.m. – The Patriot League Fisher has proven to be loaded this year, featuring three teams in the MIAA Div. 3 power rankings’ top-5. Here’s another potential preview of a matchup deep in the state tournament. Fifth-ranked Scituate (9-5-2) and fourth-ranked Pembroke (11-2-2) tied in their early matchup this year and are both rounding into form as contenders.
MARSHFIELD at Duxbury, 5:40 p.m. – A rocky, 3-7 first half of the year doesn’t paint the whole picture for Duxbury (7-8-1), losing four of those games against strong opponents by just a goal. A 5-1 win over Div. 2 threat Barnstable ignited a 4-1-1 stretch since, including a 3-2 win over the Rams (10-4-1). Marshfield has a chance at revenge in a matchup that will help both as the state tournament nears.
Hudson at LITTLETON/BROMFIELD, 7 p.m. – Littleton/Bromfield (14-1) enters this one as one of the state’s hottest teams on a 12-game win streak. Reigning state semifinalist Hudson (9-4-1) has won five of its last six. Softer schedules for both Div. 4 threats pins this one as a major measuring stick matchup, especially for a Littleton/Bromfield that ranks No. 3 in the latest MIAA power rankings.
SUNDAY
CANTON at Tewksbury, 12:15 p.m. at Tsongas Center – The Ed Burns Coffee Pot Tournament’s Doherty division unfolding this way, pitting the top-two teams in Div. 2 against one another in a potential state final preview for the in-season tourney’s title, is nothing short of phenomenal. A day after Tewksbury (14-0-1) flexed its strength with a semifinal win over Div. 1 juggernaut Arlington, Canton (14-1) did the same to Hingham on Monday. If tuning into this game isn’t already your pre-Super Bowl plans, reschedule.
Winchester at WOBURN, 2 p.m. – Potentially a raucous matchup. These two meet in the Ed Burns Coffee Pot Tournament’s Brinn final after they also face off in Middlesex League Liberty play Wednesday. Two games in five days. At their home O’Brien Ice Rink. Hours before the Patriots play in the Super Bowl. Oh yeah.
GIRLS
WEDNESDAY
HINGHAM at Norwell/Scituate/Abington, 7:50 p.m. – NSA (8-4-2) has turned heads this year as a Div. 2 threat with some big performances against strong Patriot League competition, including an upset win over Duxbury. Eyes can now point to another crossover tilt against a contender. Defending Div. 1 state champion Hingham (11-3-1) is on a roll since dropping tight losses to Duxbury and NDA (H).
THURSDAY
King Philip at DUXBURY, 7:20 p.m. – Both programs have looked to get one another on their schedules for a few years, and now finally come together in a season both are major contenders. A key challenge for KP (11-2-1) as it looks for a signature win. Yet another chance for the favorited-Dragons (12-4-1) to round into championship form.
SATURDAY
Belmont at WOBURN, 2 p.m. – These Middlesex League Liberty matchups have been a must-circle every week. Woburn (11-3) still leads the league title race, but anything can happen to shake that up. It needs a win over the two-time defending league champs to stay in the driver’s seat. Belmont (8-4-3) hasn’t lost in four straight games, though, and has already beat the Tanners 3-1 earlier this year.
DEDHAM at Medfield, 4:40 p.m. – Just one league loss for Dedham (10-5) thus far as it looks to keep pace with Westwood in the Tri-Valley League title race. Defending state champion Medfield (9-6) looks for revenge for an earlier 5-2 loss, and a win here would be a strong lift to another up-and-down year for the Warriors.
Billerica/Chelmsford at METHUEN/TEWKSBURY, 5 p.m. – Another meeting between Div. 1 contenders out of the MVC/DCL Large. Billerica/Chelmsford (8-4-2) comes off a 1-0 win over Archbishop Williams in which Gianna Cedrone had 37 saves. The Red Rangers (12-0-2) have still only allowed five goals this year. Expecting another low-scoring barn-burner.
SHAWSHEEN/BEDFORD/LOWELL at Waltham, 5 p.m. – It’s been a bit of a tough stretch of late for Shawsheen/Bedford/Lowell (9-4), which started at 6-0 until Waltham (7-7-1) edged it, 5-4. Rams should be plenty hungry for revenge and a notable win to get them back in a groove. Both come off matchups against Div. 1 contenders on Wednesday.
NOTRE DAME (H) at St. Mary’s (L), 6 p.m. – Two of the youngest but two of the strongest. NDA (10-1-3) and St. Mary’s (11-1-2) are major players in the Div. 1 state title race once again, bolstered by strong leaders and talented underclassmen/middle schoolers in their respective programs. An intriguing head-to-head between the No. 1 and No. 3 teams in the latest MIAA power rankings, a tough follow to NDA’s Wednesday matchup against fifth-ranked Bishop Feehan.
FALMOUTH at Nauset, 7:30 p.m. – A rematch between top-10 teams in the latest MIAA Div. 2 power rankings. Nauset (9-7) had a six-game win streak building when Falmouth (11-4) snapped it with a 7-4 win. Warriors looks to somewhat return the favor against a Clippers group that’s won nine of their last 10 games. Big game in the Cape and Islands League title race, too.
