Joonas Korpisalo gets nod for Bruins against Panthers
A day after being named to the Finnish Olympic team as an injury replacement, Joonas Korpisalo has been handed the net for the Bruins’ final game before the lengthy break for the Games.
Korpisalo hopes to ride his hot January (4-0-1) into February when the B’s take on the Florida Panthers in Sunrise on Wednesday night (7 p.m., TNT).
“(Jeremy Swayman) was really good and we obviously wanted to give him the start in the outdoor game,” coach Marco Sturm told reporters in Florida. “And this one today I think is a tricky one. We have the Olympics coming up and (Swayman’s) probably thinking about that, too. We thought Korpi was playing really well. (Swayman) had already played three games in a row, so there’s a lot more to it. We hope Korpi will be the right guy.”
The rest of the lineup will be the same as it was for the Stadium Series game on Sunday.
The Bruins, still missing their top two centermen (Elias Lindholm and Pavel Zacha), come into the game as the second wild card with a five-point cushion over three teams –Columbus, Toronto and Washington. The two-time defending Stanley Cup champions have been struggling, losers of their last four games and have a 4–6 record in their last 10. They are nine points behind the B’s, who could do some serious damage to the champs’ playoff hopes with a win.
Former B’s captain Brad Marchand is not expected to play though Sam Bennett, who left the Panthers’ previous game with an injury, is back in. Anton Lundell is also expected back.
The B’s will be facing a desperate Panther team, and we’ve seen what they can do when they’re desperate.
“I see them as champions,” said Sturm. “It doesn’t matter how good or bad they are, we’re going to treat it like a good game for us. These are very big points up for grab before the break starts.”
