Brayan Bello discusses World Baseball Classic, key focus for ’26 Red Sox

Brayan Bello’s place on Team Dominican Republic’s 2026 World Baseball Classic roster is officially official.

“The Kid from Samaná is heading to the Classic,” the Dominican team’s official X account posted in Spanish on Thursday morning.

The Red Sox right-hander also confirmed the news at Fenway Fest earlier this month.

“I feel very excited, proud to represent my country in the tournament,” Bello said via translator.

Bello, who turns 27 on May 17, is coming off a strong season in which he tossed 29 games, including 28 starts, and posted career-bests in ERA (3.35), WHIP (1.236), innings pitched (166.2) and a slew of other metrics.

“It was a good year,” Bello said via translator at Fenway Fest earlier this month. “I think that I learned a lot.”

Bello, who described his offseason as “good” but “super short,” is one of many Red Sox pitchers who reported early to the club’s spring training complex in Fort Myers, Fla.

His key objective is trying to prepare his body to better endure the grueling MLB schedule and the inevitable weariness that comes down the stretch. Bello pitched to a 2.64 ERA, and averaged 1.9 earned runs and 6.3 innings per outing in 16 games between the beginning of June and end of August, then posted a 5.40 ERA and averaged 3.0 ER and 5.0 innings in five September starts.

“One of the points that I learned was how to prepare my body, to keep strong, to stay strong during those last months of the season, which are obviously the most important months of the baseball season,” Bello said. “Those are things that we point out that we are working on and trying to prepare in a better way for this year.”

The homegrown Bello is entering the third season of a six-year, $55 million extension that runs through ‘29 with a club option for ‘30. He will earn $6.16 million this season, but the average annual value of his contract counts for $9.16 million of Boston’s luxury tax payroll.

The Red Sox have also fielded calls from teams interested in acquiring him.

“No, I haven’t seen them,” Bello said of the reports.
