Christa Miller picks another winner with ‘Shrinking’

As a complicated neighbor to Jason Segel’s neurotic psychiatrist in “Shrinking,” the Apple TV hit comedy series about unorthodox shrinks, Christa Miller finds herself in what certainly looks like another long-running sitcom.

At 61, Miller had nine seasons on “The Drew Carey Show” another nine on “Scrubs” and six seasons with “Cougar Town.”
As “Shrinking” begins its third season, when, she was asked in a Zoom interview, does she know the show that you’re in is actually going to keep going and going and going?

“You know at different points. But ‘Shrinking’ I feel like when I read the pilot — and that was six or eight months before we were gonna do it. My agent was sending me other shows and I was, ‘No, I’m doing this show — it’s going to be picked up.’

“Then when we did the first table read, I was sitting next to Harrison (Ford who plays a shrink) and Jason was there. We did the table read and it killed!

“I walked out, and the people — all the Apple executives and the Warner Brother executives — were right behind me. And I was, ‘Don’t you guys have a notes session?’ And, ‘No,’ no notes.

“I thought, ‘Well, this show is great. They trusted us. They weren’t going to interfere.’ It was good. They left there with no notes.

“I’ve never had a table read for a pilot that… wasn’t like, five hours in notes. Really.

“I see it as a show that would just evolve and keep going. It takes a lot of effort to write these incredible episodes. So, we’ve got to hope that the writers are up for it. Because we are having a blast.”

Miller’s married (25 years) to Bill Lawrence, the creator behind “Scrubs” and co-creator of “Cougar Town,” “Spin City,” “Ted Lasso” and “Shrinking.”

Miller’s Liz is Segel’s next door neighbor who is eager, as the series begins, to help as he mourns his wife’s sudden death and deals with his troubled teenage daughter.

“Liz is so different than who I am. It’s very complicated for me to get in and work on her intention,” Miller said. “But also really fun in a tricky way, like figuring out a puzzle.

“I feel she has gone through these problems and is looking for something. She’s learning — and I root for her because I think she’s really striving to be better.

“She’s also learned to open up more and to trust friends and relationships. She is someone that says whatever she wants to; she has no filter and is in everyone’s business. Which would drive me crazy.

“Luckily, she’s funny.”
