Gophers’ Niko Medved disputes no-call in Ohio State loss
Gophers men’s basketball coach Niko Medved has formed his opinion of the final play of regulation in the 82-74 overtime loss at Ohio State on Tuesday. Tied at 67-67, Minnesota guard Langston Reynolds’ layup with 3 seconds left was contested at the rim by the Buckeyes’ Amare Bynum.
“I thought looking at slo-mo, I thought (Bynum) did deflect the ball,” Medved said Thursday about the non-goaltending call against the Buckeyes.
Isaac Asuma grabbed an offensive rebound, but Cade Tyson missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer and the short-handed Gophers couldn’t keep up in OT in Columbus, Ohio.
Medved confirmed the game’s officials did not review that fateful play. In the last two minutes of games, referees have to initiate video reviews on goaltending and coaches can’t challenge the play.
The Gophers previously had issues with some pivotal calls in a 70-69 overtime loss to Southern Cal at home on Jan. 9. The U submitted calls from the USC loss to the Big Ten office for review. They did so again after the Ohio State defeat.
That doesn’t change the outcomes and Minnesota (10-9, 3-5 Big Ten) has now lost four straight games going into No. 7 Nebraska’s (19-0, 8-0) visit to Williams Arena at 11 a.m. Saturday.
Omot done
California transfer wing BJ Omot (leg) is officially done for the rest of the season, Medved confirmed Thursday. The Mankato, Minn., native has not played this season and has had another procedure done.
Omot, who played in only four games at Cal last season, will likely seek a medical redshirt for this season.
Minnesota now has four scholarship players out for the season, including starting point guard Chansey Willis Jr. (foot), starting center Robert Vaihola (knee) and backup guard Chance Stephens (illness).
This has decreased the Gophers’ rotation to seven total players, including two freshman. It’s a plight Minnesota has been in since before the start of Big Ten play in December.
“Sometimes you just go through seasons like this,” Medved said. “It just doesn’t go your way with injuries and there is not much you can do about it. I think we are in one of those situations.”
Alumni Day
The Gophers will welcome back dozens of former players for Alumni Day at The Barn on Saturday.
“It’s cool for me, too,” Medved said. “A lot of them I know from different generations, so to have a lot of them here. Another thing that is cool is how many of them live here in the Twin Cities. I think that is really unique to our program and this place.”
