Wareham passes big test by taking down Brockton
BROCKTON — Wareham faced one of its biggest tests of the season Tuesday night against a tough Brockton team, and the Vikings ultimately came out on top, 78-67.
Wareham (10-1) came into this game as the No. 1 team in the latest MIAA Division 4 power rankings, while Brockton (8-5) came in No. 11 in Div. 1.
Wareham connected on eight three-pointers in the first half, which helped it jump out to a big lead that it would not relinquish.
“The game plan was just to play our style of basketball,” Wareham coach Steve Faniel said. “In the first half, we’ve kind of played at their pace, and we weren’t playing our style of basketball, and we can play different styles of basketball, but the game was much closer that way.”
In the first quarter, both teams traded threes to start, with Cody Lambert scoring for the Boxers and Tyler Cannon for the Vikings. Cannon later tied it up at nine apiece with his second three of the quarter. After this, Wareham went into a four-point lead. Brockton ended the quarter on a 6-2 run, as Lambert tied it up at the buzzer, to make it 15 apiece.
Brockton had the lead for most of the second quarter but Wareham ended the quarter on a 13-5 run to take a 36-29 lead into halftime. Coleman Brito and Cannon had three three-pointers each in the first half.
Wareham kept pouring it on with the scoring in the third quarter as they climbed into a 56-35 lead with three minutes left in the third, which included a three-pointer from Aaron Cote, his second of the game. The Boxers then went on a 7-0 run, which was capped off by Jordan Holmes Fox completing a three-point play. The Vikings led 60-44 at the end of the third.
The Boxers were able to trim the deficit, and fought until the bitter end with Nysion Miranda making the final five points of the game for the Boxers, including a layup at the buzzer. However, it would not be enough as Wareham walked away with the statement victory.
“We want to play really fast, get the ball up and down the court, to get paint touches, drive the ball, kick outs, and get good looks at the basket,” Faniel said.
