Red Sox trade recently-acquired infielder to clear space for Ranger Suarez
Shortly before the Red Sox announced the signing of Ranger Suarez, the club swung a trade to clear space on the 40-man roster, sending recently-acquired infielder Tristan Gray to the Minnesota Twins in exchange for catching prospect Nate Baez.
Baez, 24, was originally selected in the 12th round of the 2022 MLB Draft by the Twins and split last season between High-A and Double-A. In 96 games he batted .278 with eight home runs with 54 RBI and a .794 OPS, and in 29 games at catcher with Double-A Wichita he threw out 14 of 61 runners (23%).
He represents the latest minor league catcher acquired by the Red Sox this offseason, joining Ronny Hernandez and Luke Heyman, each of whom also came to Boston in trades.
Gray was another offseason addition, acquired in November from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for right-hander Luis Guerrero. Prior to that deal Gray appeared in 30 MLB games for the Rays, batting .231 with three home runs and nine RBI while playing all over the infield, and he also batted .270 with an .805 OPS in 72 games at Triple-A.
Gray never suited up in a Red Sox uniform, but he did participate in Trevor Story’s offseason camp earlier this month.
