Boston Weather: Snowy MLK Day to kick off week
Boston is set for a snowy holiday Monday, with potential for up to six inches of snow on the ground, leading into a fairly cold and dry week, according to National Weather Service forecasts.
“We’ve got a storm system that will be going on overnight into the first half of the day Monday out with some lingering snow showers on Martin Luther King Day,” said NWS meteorologist Francis Tarasiewicz. “Temperatures … near freezing Monday, maybe slightly above.”
Forecasters expect snowfall around Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut from Sunday into early Monday, with the heaviest precipitation between 6 p.m. and 2 a.m., according to the NWS. The snow is expected to taper off from west to east Monday morning, lasting latest around eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
NWS warned of widespread accumulations of three to five inches, with localized spots up to six inches.
Boston is expected to see most snowfall before 10 a.m. Monday, according to forecasts, before skies gradually become mostly sunny during the day. The high is expected to reach just over freezing in the mid-30s, with gusty winds throughout the day and night.
“We’ll have a cooling trend Tuesday, and then we’ll start to warm things back up for Wednesday and Thursday, with Thursday being the warmest day of the week,” Tarasiewicz said.
Tuesday and Wednesday are expected to remain mostly sunny and dry, NWS forecasts. The high Tuesday may reach up to the mid-20s, as icy gusts up to 24 mph continue to blow through. A weak clipper system may also bring additional light snow Tuesday morning.
Wednesday is forecast to be slightly warmer, reaching a high in the low 30s, before temperatures jump again to a high around 40 degrees on Thursday, NWS states.
A second chance for a light clipper system — an area of low pressure from Canada bringing a quick moving bit of light snow — may arrive again late Thursday into Friday, Tarasiewicz said

Friday is expected to remain mostly sunny and windy with a high in the upper 20s, forecasts show. The weekend is preliminarily expected to remain icy with below freezing temperatures.
“Then beyond that, really some high pressure building in for the weekend, and there’ll be a coastal storm offshore,” Tarasiewicz said. “So we’ll have to watch the progress of that.”
