Twin Cities: Events planned for Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday

Twin Cities residents of all ages looking to participate in celebrations of Martin Luther King Jr. Day can take part in with these events. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is Monday, Jan. 19.

St. Paul

40th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration: ‘One Dream. One Minnesota.’

This free event from 10 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Monday, Jan. 19, is hosted at the Ordway Concert Hall at 345 Washington St., St. Paul. Described as the “grand finale” of the weekend’s events leading up it, and its 40th anniversary, the show will bring together “artistry, storytelling and community honor,” and features artists such as the Imnizaska Drum Group, Patriotic Heritage Honor Guard, Jovonta Patton, Se’Anna Johnson as emcee and the TKO Drumline and Knockout Dance Team. The event, supported by the state, “centers unity and amplifies opportunities for community and civic engagement.” Local nonprofit Conceive Believe Achieve is also expected to have a display at the event. Day of Love in Action: A Time of Service and Learning on Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Hosted by St. Clement’s, St. John the Evangelist, St. John in the Wilderness and St. Mary’s Episcopal churches, this annual day of service returns from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 19, at St. John the Evangelist at 60 Kent Street North. Children K-6th grade can participate in a day of service. The event will include a hands-on art and service project, “faith reflections on race and immigration” and learning about civil rights leaders and a Eucharist. The day will also include a light lunch. Parents and caregivers can drop their children off or stay and can join the closing Eucharist at 1:15 p.m.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day Morning of Service

This service-based event is open to all ages, 9 to 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 19, at Two Rivers High School South Gym at 1897 Delaware Ave., Mendota Heights. Attendees will participate in service projects for all ages. For more information, visit instagram.com/p/DSkoJGJkTu7/.

Hamline’s MLK 2025 Observation

Starting at 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22, Hamline University will host its Martin Luther King Jr. commemoration at the Sundin Music Hall at 1531 Hewitt Ave. The event, titled “The American Dream: King’s 1965 Call for Justice,” will include remarks by university President Mayme Hostetter and keynote speaker Abdul Omari, who serves on the University of Minnesota Foundation Board of Trustees. There also will be a student reading of King’s work, live performances, including gospel music by Sherri Orr, the presentation of the 2026 Beloved Community Awards and a benediction by Chaplain Kelly Figueroa-Ray. 11th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday of Service

Sweet Potato Comfort Pie hosts its 11th annual event in honor of Martin Luther King, 1:45 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 18, at the Golden Valley Country Club, 7001 Golden Valley Rd, Golden Valley. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Breakfast

The 36th annual breakfast, one of the largest in the country, according to host General Mills, will be held from 8 to 9:30 a.m. (doors open at 6:45 a.m., with breakfast starting at 7:30 a.m.) Monday, Jan. 19, at the Minneapolis Convention Center, 1301 Second Ave. S., Minneapolis. The event will feature keynote speakers journalist and documentarian Soledad O’Brien and Freeman A. Powderhorn Park Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration

The Powderhorn Park Association and Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Board hosts its 28th annual celebration, 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 19, at the Powderhorn Park recreation center. Minneapolis Parks Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration

The free event hosted by Minneapolis Parks and Recreation, 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 19, at the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Recreation Center, 4055 Nicollet Ave. S, Minneapolis includes keynote speaker Kenneth Foxworth and emcee Tim Dumas. Cynthia Bryant will receive the “Living the Dream Award,” which goes to those who “embody Dr. King’s message of justice for all and commitment to community, and their actions reflect his teachings and legacy.” The event’s performing artist is Known MPLS. This free, all-ages program goes from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, at 40th Street Park at 1900 40th St East, Minneapolis, invites all attendees to contribute to a collective art piece. The art will be part of a “commemorative board dedicated to Dr. King’s vision of a harmonious and inclusive society.,” according to the Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Board.
