Grand jury indicts alleged gunman in deadly Nashua, NH country club shooting
NASHUA, N.H. — A Hillsboro County grand jury has returned a series of indictments against the man accused of opening fire inside the Sky Meadow Country Club in September, killing one and injuring several others during a dinner service and wedding reception.
Attorney General John Formella announced on Thursday that 24-year-old Hunter Nadeau, a Nashua resident and former club employee, has been indicted on alternative counts of purposeful first-degree murder and reckless second-degree murder in the death of 59-year-old Robert Steven DeCesare, of Nashua, who had been dining with family when he was gunned down.
Nadeau also faces two counts of attempted murder — one for allegedly shooting club employee and Lowell resident Steve Burtman, and another for allegedly firing at a group of patrons — along with two counts of first-degree assault for “purposely causing bodily injury” to Burtman and to patron Brianna Surette, of Lynn, by shooting each with a firearm, according to prosecutors.
The shooting erupted just after 7:30 p.m. Sept. 20, inside Prime, the country club’s restaurant, in what authorities have described as a burst of violence lasting under a minute.
DeCesare was fatally shot after stepping between the gunman and his family.
In addition to Burtman and Surette suffering gunshot wounds, four restaurant patrons were injured while fleeing or intervening, according to authorities.
The incident prompted a massive law-enforcement response, and Nadeau was arrested in a nearby neighborhood within 30 minutes of the shots being fired.
Joseph Chaitin, who along with Michelle Losh launched a GoFundMe page to support Burtman, told The Sun just days after the shooting that Burtman suffered major injuries to his jaw and mouth that would require multiple reconstructive surgeries.
The most recent update on the GoFundMe page, posted Dec. 3, said Burtman “is doing great” and recovering faster than expected.
According to the update, he had his jaw unwired — a milestone doctors originally did not anticipate until this month — and is now able to speak, though he still wears an exterior brace on his jaw and faces additional reconstructive procedures. The post added that Burtman continues to “amaze his doctors” and that he and his wife, Amanda, have been “left absolutely speechless by the outpouring of support.”
To date, the campaign has raised $181,484 toward its $200,000 goal.
George Voutselas, who owns the Majestic Barber Shop on Middlesex Street in Lowell, was also at the country club that night, but escaped unscathed.
Voutselas shared his story with The Sun a few weeks after the shooting, noting that he had been attending a wedding reception inside the club with his family when gunfire erupted. He described a chaotic scene as guests fled through the kitchen, and said a bloodied man ran alongside them during the evacuation — a man they later realized was Nadeau.
As reported in multiple outlets from witness accounts, a guest is alleged to have struck Nadeau in the face with a chair, knocking the gun from his hands.
“Thank God for that guy,” Voutselas said. “He saved a lot of lives, probably.”
Voutselas said Nadeau identified himself to members of the wedding party as the shooter before fleeing the scene on foot.
Authorities have not identified a motive for the shooting.
Formella has said there is no evidence the attack was hate-based, despite witness accounts of Nadeau shouting political statements during the incident.
“There’s been reports that there are certain statements, such as ‘free Palestine,’ but based on the evidence we have gathered, Mr. Nadeau made a number of statements during the event and we don’t have any evidence at this time that would indicate that Mr. Nadeau was motivated by a hate-based motivation,” Formella told members of the press hours after the shooting occurred. “In fact, at this point, I would say the evidence leads us to believe that it was more likely that Mr. Nadeau was trying to make a number of statements to create chaos in the moment.”
Authorities have also said there is no connection between Nadeau and DeCesare.
