Dodge, Ford, and Hyundai Grab the Top 2026 NACTOY Awards

If you’re looking for a quick snapshot of where the market is headed, the North American Car, Truck, and Utility Vehicle of the Year awards usually tell the story before anyone even hits the show floor. The 2026 NACTOY winners were announced to kick off Detroit’s auto show media day, and this year’s picks cover a pretty wide range of what shoppers are actually cross-shopping right now: a reinvented muscle car, a street-smart compact pickup, and a family-focused three-row SUV.

The big headline on the car side is the Dodge Charger taking North American Car of the Year honors. That’s a fascinating win considering how much conversation has surrounded the Charger’s transition, from the early focus on the electric Daytona models to the later arrival of the gas-powered Sixpack variants. Love it or hate it, the new Charger is a statement vehicle in an era where brands are trying to keep personality alive while also figuring out what performance means going forward.

Over in Utility Vehicle of the Year, Hyundai’s all-new Palisade landed the trophy, and the timing makes sense. The three-row crossover space is brutally competitive, and adding a much-needed hybrid option into that segment feels like a direct response to what families have been asking for. Hyundai also leaned into the value-and-tech formula that has worked well for the brand lately, which is exactly the kind of mix that tends to resonate with jurors and, more importantly, with real buyers.

Truck of the Year went to Ford’s Maverick Lobo, which is a win that feels tailor-made for today’s enthusiast crowd. The Lobo takes the practical Maverick template and flips the script with a lowered stance, sharper handling, and a special all-wheel-drive setup meant to feel more like a sporty street truck than a traditional workhorse. It still keeps the usefulness that made the Maverick popular in the first place, and the win also continues Ford’s long-running streak of taking home this particular NACTOY trophy.

What’s interesting about the finalists list is how much variety it shows. The Charger beat out the returning Honda Prelude and the latest Nissan Sentra, while the Palisade edged the Lucid Gravity and a reinvented Nissan Leaf that’s now positioned as more of a compact crossover. In the truck category, the Maverick Lobo topped a pair of Rams, including a Ram 1500 with the Hemi V8 back in the mix and a redesigned Ram 2500. Put it all together and the 2026 results feel less like a single trend and more like a reminder that buyers still want choices, whether that means electric, hybrid, or gas, as long as the vehicle nails its mission.
