‘They’re taking this more seriously’: Alleged BMC stabber back in court
A probable cause hearing for Branden Bannister, a Roxbury man accused of stabbing a Boston Medical Center worker in December, was continued, despite an objection from the defendant’s counsel on Monday.
Bannister was arrested Dec. 10 after allegedly getting into a fight with two BMC public safety officers outside the hospital that left one officer in critical condition. Police also charged Bannister with cocaine trafficking after they said they found drugs following the stabbing.
Bannister’s been held on $50,000 bail since he was arraigned and was supposed to appear in Boston Municipal Court Central for a probable cause hearing that prosecutors instead asked to continue.
Assistant District Attorney Olivia Izzi said they had permission to bring the case before a grand jury but were waiting for medical records from the victim.
Tanvi Verma, Bannister’s lawyer, objected to the continuance, saying that the Commonwealth has evidence, including a video of the alleged incident which they’ve alluded to at other court appearances, that they haven’t given her.
“I’ve never seen this video,” Verma said, adding that there is other information “that I haven’t been given notice of.”
Pointing out the media in the courtroom, Verma said, “they’re taking this more seriously than the Commonwealth at this point.”
Izzi said she took issue with that comment and told the judge she would get in contact with Verma.
“I’ve reached out a few times,” Verma added.

Verma also tried to ask for a bail review, which the prosecution objected to. Izzi noted that Bannister currently has a federal retainer, but did not elaborate on the circumstances.
Bail remained at $50,000, and Bannister will be back in court on Feb. 13.
