Patriots open roster spot by cutting veteran running back
The Patriots waived running back D’Ernest Johnson on Monday.
The move leaves the team with one open spot on their 53-man roster. The Patriots could potentially fill that spot by activating cornerback Alex Austin or running back Terrell Jennings from injured reserve.

The Patriots also released offensive tackle Sebastian Gutierrez from the practice squad on Monday. Gutierrez was just re-signed last week. The move also leaves the Patriots with one open spot on their practice squad.
Johnson, 29, joined the Patriots in October. He has 13 carries for 25 yards in seven games. He also added five kick returns for 128 yards.
The Patriots also have running back Elijah Mitchell on their practice squad.
Austin could provide depth if cornerback Christian Gonzalez’s concussion lingers into Sunday’s divisional-round playoff matchup.
