Cape cops recover kilo of suspected coke, $10K in cash
A 62-year-old man was arrested for allegedly trafficking drugs between Cape Cod and Nantucket last week.
Police charged Edward Gillespie, of Nantucket, with trafficking over 200 grams of cocaine. He appeared in Barnstable District court on Friday. Gillespie was held and awaits a dangerousness hearing. The Cape and Islands District Attorney’s Office is prosecuting the case.
Officers from Barnstable Police Department’s Detective’s Unit arrested Gillespie Thursday around 11 a.m. while they say he was in the process of preparing to transport one kilogram of cocaine from Hyannis to Nantucket.
A copy of a police report from the arrest was not available by press time.
“As a result of an ongoing investigation initiated by the Barnstable Police,” the department said in a statement, the suspect “was identified as a narcotics supplier, trafficking cocaine from Hyannis to the island.”
After his arrest, the unit requested and received a search warrant for Gillespie’s Nantucket home. Officers from Barnstable as well as the Nantucket Police Detective Unit, U.S. Coast Guard, and the Cape Cod Drug Enforcement Agency executed the warrant.
The Nantucket Registry of Deeds lists Gillespie’s address to an apartment complex at 7 Windy Way.
According to Barnstable Police, they recovered additional cocaine, amphetamines, and $10,000 in U.S. currency, as well as “evidence of narcotics trafficking.”
In total, officers seized 1,141 grams of suspected cocaine and 68 grams of alleged amphetamines, a statement from Barnstable Police said. The drugs could be worth tens of thousands of dollars on the street.

A photo from the arrest and search warrant seizures shared by the department showed small baggies containing a white substance, a bag of orange pills, a digital scale, and stacks of $100 bills.

On top of the charge Gillespie faces in Barnstable District Court, Nantucket Police said they would seek additional narcotics trafficking charges for the drugs seized during the execution of the search warrant in Nantucket District Court.
