Javi Lopez reaches monumental milestone in leading Central Catholic over BC High

Javi Lopez’s 33 points not only lifted Central Catholic to a 67-60 nonleague road victory over BC High on Sunday afternoon, but he also further etched his name in Raiders lore.

Lopez came into the game needing 15 points to become the school’s all-time leading scorer and he accomplished the milestone on two free throws in the second quarter.

“He’s a special player, we’re fortunate to have him,” Central Catholic head coach Mark Dunham said.

Lopez, a four-year starter, has totaled 1,505 career points and is atop a list that features several standout players in Central Catholic’s illustrious history.

“It’s special to be on the list with guys like Tyler Nelson, Jonathan Cruz. It’s very special,” Lopez said.

BC High (5-3) and Central Catholic (7-1) matchups have become must see, from the 2022 postseason when the Eagles knocked off the Raiders on their way to a state championship to 2023 when the Raiders eliminated the Eagles in an overtime thriller in the quarterfinals of the state tournament.

Sunday’s much anticipated matchup lived up to the hype as well.

“Every time we play them we know it’s going to be a good game,” Dunham said.

Lopez set the tone in the opening quarter scoring 11 points to give the Central Catholic the 24-16 lead.

In the second quarter the Eagles defense buckled down, holding the Raiders to 10 points while their offense put up 24 points thanks to Owen Adams, who scored a team high 22 points on the day and found his touch beyond the arc by knocking down four triples in the first half.

With the Eagles taking a 36-34 lead into the half, Lopez and the Raiders came out in the second half on fire as they opened the third quarter on a 7-0 run forcing the Eagles to call a timeout and reconvene.

“Playing the No. 1 team in the state in the power rankings, it’s big for us,” Lopez said.

The two teams then traded baskets throughout the quarter leading to the Raiders taking a 49-46 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Trailing 59-49 midway through the fourth quarter,  the host Eagles put together a 7-1 run to cut the lead to four. With momentum seemingly shifting BC high’s way, Lopez found sophomore Elkin Pena for a layup to give the Raiders cushion to escape with the victory.

“We’re really starting to come into our own right now,” Dunham said.

Next up for the Raiders is a matchup against Brewster Academy on Wednesday before they host Tewksbury.
