Quincy wins double overtime thriller over North Quincy

QUINCY – It seemed the entire city of Quincy was packed into the North Quincy High School gym for a Friday night boys basketball clash between North Quincy and Quincy.

The back-and-forth affair needed double overtime to find a victor and it was Quincy which came out on top with a 62-60 Patriot League Fisher win.

The game started slowly on the offensive side of the ball, with only 17 points being scored in the first quarter in the meeting of cross-city rivals. Not much changed in a second quarter that was full of turnovers and missed shots, and North Quincy exited with a narrow 19-15 lead after a 10-2 run to end the half.

The third quarter saw the Presidents and Red Raiders continue the back-and-forth play and Quincy was able to push it to a 31-31 tie to end the quarter.

This momentum continued early in the fourth, as a few big blocks by Presidents big Christian Raphael and strong shooting from Logan Mann made it seem like the Presidents were going to build a lead and take home a regulation victory. However, North Quincy’s Aaden Chen hit a massive corner three-pointer to tie the game, 44-44, and force overtime.

The first OT was played at a slower pace and ended at 50-50, with a few more clutch steals by De Lima and consistent shots at the line from Medina, forcing yet another overtime as the North Quincy fan section made its way down all the way to the floor with tension rising within the gym.

The Raiders got into foul trouble in the second overtime and let up two big shots from beyond the arc, leading to a 62-60 Quincy win.

Medina led the Presidents with 27 points, while Shawn Perry had 13 points and Sean Conroy had 12.

The Presidents look to stay hot at Silver Lake on Monday, while the Raiders look to get back in the win column against Whitman-Hanson next week.
