Second half defensive masterpiece lifts Old Rochester over West Bridgewater

WEST BRIDGEWATER — The Old Rochester and West Bridgewater girls basketball teams came into Tuesday’s South Coast Conference matchup with matching 4-1 records. After pulling away in the second half, Old Rochester continued building league momentum with a convincing 54-32 victory.

“I just think that West Bridgewater played a really good first half. They brought good energy. Coach (Steve Reddington) does a great job with them,” Bulldogs head coach Rick Regan. “They didn’t quit on anything, and we had to match that intensity, and we did that in the second half, and then we outlasted them a little bit, and we kept plugging away.”

Old Rochester started out with a 5-0 lead in the game, with Sadie Hartley-Matteson hitting a three-pointer, and Carly Mello hitting a layup with contact. The Wildcats followed with a 7-1 run to take their first lead of the game when Brooke Ryan made a three-pointer from the left side. Then at the end of the quarter, freshman Kayla Walker made a layup with a foul, and then completed the three-point play by making the free throw, and the Wildcats ended with a 14-13 lead.

At the start of the second quarter, the Bulldogs retook the lead with two free throws from freshman Maddie Hardy. Jill Bouvier got the lead back by making a layup for the Wildcats. Hartley-Matteson then made the Bulldogs go up 19-18 after a steal by Sydney Bosma. The Bulldogs were on an 8-0 run until Ryan made a jumper from the key, which cut it down to 23-20, which would be the score at the half.

In the third, the Wildcats were able to cut their deficit to one point after scoring four out of the first six points of the quarter, which included a Bouvier mid-range jumper. The Bulldogs responded with a 7-0 run, which started with another three from Hartley-Matteson. The Bulldogs strengthened as the game progressed as Bosma got the Bulldogs a double-digit lead to end the quarter, hitting two free throws to make it 39-29.

The Bulldogs absolutely dominated the final quarter, only allowing three points from the Wildcats. Seven players from the Bulldogs contributed at least two points in the quarter alone, with Hardy making a three-pointer, and the Bulldogs went on to seal the game and improve their winning streak to four.

Hartley-Matteson led the Bulldogs with 20, Zoe Papadakis scored eight bench points for Old Rochester, followed by Emma Johnson and Hardy with seven each.

“My mindset was definitely just helping my team,” said Hartley-Matteson, “getting everyone involved, trying to take as many shots as I can, while making sure the ball is being spread throughout everyone and just keeping energy throughout our team so that we could pull away.”

Ryan led with seven points for the Wildcats, while Croce and Sami O’Neill followed up with six each.
