Rhamondre Stevenson playing in vintage form when it matters most for Patriots

FOXBORO — Running back Rhamondre Stevenson is playing like one of the Patriots’ best players over the final month of the season.

Stevenson saved his best performance for the regular-season finale, a 38-10 win over the Dolphins. He carried the ball seven times for 131 yards and two touchdowns and caught two passes for 22 yards with another TD, running like a man possessed.

“It was a good performance,” Stevenson said after the win. “I believe I ran the ball pretty efficiently, got downhill, scored a few touchdowns. My mom was in the stands, so I’m proud of it.”

The veteran running back, who was a game captain Sunday, was the team’s biggest impact-maker on their first offensive drive, carrying the ball twice for 65 yards on a three-play, 70-yard series in which rookie TreVeyon Henderson ran in for a 5-yard touchdown.

Stevenson first got into the end zone on the Patriots’ second offensive drive, scoring from two yards out.

Later, Stevenson gave the Patriots a 24-10 lead with a 20-yard catch in the end zone from quarterback Drake Maye. Stevenson easily beat linebacker Tyrel Dodson off the line of scrimmage and found himself wide open for the end zone grab.

His third touchdown came from 35 yards out to put the Patriots up 31-10.

PFF charted Stevenson with 104 yards after contact and three broken tackles in the performance. Heading into Week 18, Stevenson had averaged 6.7 yards per carry in his last three games. He finishes the year with 603 rushing yards and seven touchdowns while sharing the backfield with Henderson.

“We felt like we got into a little flow with TreVeyon and Rhamondre, and kind of figured out where that balance was,” head coach Mike Vrabel said Sunday. “And I think that they did a great job. We need them both.”

Henderson later scored a second touchdown for the Patriots to pull ahead 38-10. He finishes his rookie campaign with 180 carries for 911 yards with nine touchdowns. He showed off his explosive potential with multiple 50+ yard runs this season.

Stevenson hit a couple of different bumps in the road this season with the Patriots. His two lost fumbles were the difference in the Patriots’ 21-14 Week 3 loss to the Steelers. He lost another fumble in the Patriots’ Week 5 win over the Panthers, then missed three games later in the season with a toe injury.

He’s come back stronger than ever since Week 15 and is running better now than he has since his second NFL season, his lone 1,000-yard campaign.

“To be honest with you, I try to stay pretty level,” Stevenson said Sunday. “No matter what’s going on, how good it could get, how bad it could get, I try to stay pretty level. So really, I was just day-by-day back then, when it wasn’t really going my way, just day-by-day, just putting my best foot forward, not really trying to get discouraged. And my teammates and coaches made a little easier on me. They had my back and things like that. So I’ll say, I just try to stay relentless, try to keep the same headspace no matter what’s going good or going bad.”

Patriots rookie left tackle Will Campbell returned from injury to help pave the way for Stevenson and Henderson.

He has confidence in both backs.

“Man, I’ve said it before for both of those guys, and whoever is back there behind us, we have some dynamic play makers, and we just got to give them something, and they can make something happen,” Campbell said. “And I think throughout this season, both of those guys have proved that Rhamondre had a big night tonight. I’m super happy for him. He works his tail off every week, and he’s been playing really well, so I’m super excited for him.”

The Patriots will need a balanced offense to progress through the playoffs. Currently, they have that in an MVP candidate quarterback and a two-headed monster in the backfield with Stevenson and Henderson both capable of making big plays.
