Mike Vrabel makes case for Patriots QB Drake Maye to win MVP
FOXBORO — Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel doesn’t have a vote, but if he did, he’d pick his quarterback, Drake Maye, for MVP.
Vrabel made a pretty strong case when asked about Maye’s MVP candidacy on Monday.
“He’s extremely accurate. He’s made the most of every passing opportunity,” Vrabel said. “We’ve created a lot of X plays, and to create X plays, about 30%’s scheme, and abotu 70%’s the players making a play. Part of that is the quarterback putting it in a great location for run after catch. I think you continue to see that, his ability to extend, use his legs to gain first downs, critical first downs. Ability to score when we’ve asked him to score and run it in. Everything that we’ve asked, he continues to get better. He’s not satisified. So, I know that our success and where we are right now today has a lot to do with Drake Maye.”
Maye finishes his second NFL season ranked first in QBR, passer rating, completion percentage, yards after attempt, total expected points added (EPA), EPA per play and completion percentage over expected (CPOE).
Maye (+150) is currently second in NFL MVP odds, via Draft Kings, behind Rams QB Matthew Stafford (-180), who has more passing yards and touchdowns. When including rushing yards, Maye has more total yards than Stafford.
The Patriots have the second-most 20+ yard passing plays this season behind the Rams. Maye (98.6) and Stafford (99.9) both rank highly in PFF’s deep passing grades. Maye has completed a higher rate of his deep passes this season, while Stafford has more deep passing yards.
Maye’s Patriots finished the season as AFC East champions with a 14-3 record and the No. 2 seed in their conference. Stafford’s Rams are the No. 5 seed in the NFC as wild cards with a 12-5 record.
Ultimately, odds only say so much about the NFL MVP race. It comes down to voters. The award will be announced during Super Bowl week in San Francisco at NFL Honors.
Maye wound up completing 72% of his passes for 4,394 yards with 31 touchdowns and eight interceptions while adding 450 yards and four touchdowns on the ground. It’s one of the best second-year leaps for a quarterback in NFL history and raises expectations for the Patriots in the years to come.
