Brockton earns statement boys basketball victory over Marshfield

BROCKTON – In another tough nonleague boys basketball matchup, Brockton mustered up another strong defensive effort at home Tuesday afternoon.

After losing by 40 last season to Marshfield, the Boxers nearly flipped the script in a riveting 79-58 contest with a stout defense and timely offense.

“Coach Fisher has a fantastic program,” Brockton coach Emanuel DeBarros said about getting another nonleague victory. “He’s sitting on 700-plus wins, plus, it’s a challenge. I think a lot of these guys remember that loss last year, and so they came in with that mission of ‘we want to be able to let them know that wasn’t us last year.’ ”

After trading buckets to start the first, Brockton (4-2) used a 16-5 run to close out the frame with six of those coming from sophomore Clervens Peltrop (21 points, 10 rebounds) to make it a 20-9 advantage after one.

Peltrop continued with eight more in the third to push the lead out to 37-25 at the half after Marshfield (3-1) cut the deficit to six.

“(Peltrop) is the guy that shows by example in practice,” said DeBarros. “I think guys feed off of that and everybody else is kind of just doing the same thing too now, which is great to see.”

The sophomore then added seven in the third as Brockton led 60-43 after three. Senior Cody Lambert also netted all seven of his points in the third.

Also, for the Boxers, junior Chris Africo scored 14 points while junior Nyisah Miranda came off the bench for 14 of his own.

“That’s the mentality right now, next man up,” DeBarros said about the ability to get scoring from anywhere on the floor. “I keep telling them we’re at least nine or 10 deep. So, it might be your game this week and tonight be someone else’s. You have to be unselfish to recognize that.”

The Brockton defense held Marshfield to just 8-of-18 from distance and 19-of-54 from the field.

“To be honest with you, our identity has to be on defense,” said DeBarros about the defensive effort. “We’ve talked about it all season long. Defense travels and rebounding and just trying to get out opponents to just have one possession and then get out on fast break. The guys did a great job of pushing (Marshfield), pushing the page, pushing the ball and just really sharing the ball.”

Junior Brody Hession led the Rams with 18 points while draining three triples.

Up next, the Boxers will stay at home to face Durfee next Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., while Marshfield will head home Friday at 5 p.m. to host Dennis-Yarmouth.
