Police Blotter: Fatal Walpole Crash, Christmas Day shooting
An 83-year-old man walking was struck and killed in Walpole Saturday afternoon.
The man, who has not been identified, was trying to cross Washington Street around 1:30 p.m. when he was hit by an SUV, according to Norfolk County District Attorney Michael Morrissey.
The man was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The 19-year-old woman who was driving the vehicle stayed at the scene, the DA said, and no charges have been filed.
Both the DA and Walpole Police Department are investigating the accident.
BPD nabs serial shoplifting suspect
Boston Police arrested a Lowell man who they believe is a serial shoplifter Saturday in Back Bay.
Officers responded to a call for a potential larceny from Dick’s Sporting Goods on Boylston Street around 11:39 a.m.
After they arrived on the scene, officers saw the suspect leave the store with a bag full of tagged merchandise, police said. When police stopped and searched the suspect, they said they found more than $400 of stolen merchandise.
Police arrested and charged Darrin O’Neil, 60, with larceny under $1,200 and common and notorious thief. He is expected to be arraigned in Boston Municipal Court.
According to BPD, O’Neil had seven active warrants out for his arrest, including four counts of larceny from a building, two counts of larceny from a credit card, three counts of receiving stolen property under $1,200, credit card fraud under $1,200, and two separate counts for shoplifting: one by asportation and another by concealing merchandise.
Earlier this month, the Herald reported that shoplifting arrests had more than doubled from last year and were up 260% from the five year average.
Both BPD and the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office cited in increase in enforcement as a part of the city’s Safe Shopping Initiative for the increase in arrests.
BPD Commissioner Michael Cox said that working with retailers and the business community was also a factor. “This increased reporting supports Boston Police Department’s ability to address repeat violent and high-volume offenders with the ultimate goal of keeping shoppers and retailers safe,” he said at a December press conference about city safety.
