Division 1-2 girls basketball preview: Medfield out to net third straight title

With back-to-back Div. 2 state titles under its belt, Medfield returns 11 of 14 players with junior Naya Annigeri, senior Tess Baacke and sophomore Abby Broderick leading the charge under coach Mark Nickerson.

“We hope to be tested,” said Nickerson about the Warriors trying to three-peat. “We talk about improving as the year goes along.”

Junior captain Paige Henebry adds to a very talented squad that looks to win the program’s fifth state title since 2013.

North Quincy, out of the Patriot League, has senior captain Maeghan Smith, senior Harper Mergel and juniors Tabby McDonough, A’laya Colbert and Nora Geary trying to make another state semifinal appearance.

Whitman-Hanson has Patriot League Keenan Division MVP Maliah Pierre returning with Patriot League All Stars Leah Daley and Dylan Hurley as the Panthers look to win their fifth straight Keenan title.

Duxbury, also out of the Patriot League, returns senior captains Hailey Flynn, Ella Fitzpatrick and Reagan Widdop.

Dartmouth has to replace the production of Kat Cheesbro, and the likes of seniors Kaelyn Zuber, Lily Gangi, Olivia Faria and Skylar Floyd should all step up in the scoring department, with newcomer Nia Barnes looking to be a spark off the bench.

Out of the Catholic Conference, Notre Dame of Hingham has Bentley commit Elle Orlando, junior center Emma Trout and sophomore Reagan Costello as part of a tough out come tournament time.

Norwood of the Tri-Valley League has a young squad with sophomores Mo Larkee and Ellen Baranowski as key returners.

Foxboro and St. Mary’s of Lynn bumped up to the Div. 2 bracket and should instantly be part of the contender’s list. The Warriors have senior Adrianna Porazzo and junior Alaysia Drummonds to lead what should be another defensive-focused squad. For the Spartans, freshman Sysy Emmanuel, senior Jillian Roberts, and sophomores Gabi Lorenzini and Charleigh Green are all players to watch.

In Div. 1, state runner-up Bishop Feehan has senior captain and Stonehill College commit Mollie Mullen looking to take another step forward with the likes of juniors Addie Frenette, Shannon LaMorticelli and Emmette Barry leaning on their experience.

In the Bay State Conference, Braintree is fresh off a state semifinal appearance and returns senior captain Francesca Mazzini at point, junior Eva Downing and junior Izzy Rotondo to help the Wamps contend again.

Natick, which plays pressure defense all game, has sophomore Kayla Dunlap and juniors Denai Williams and Bridget Pole anchoring a well-balanced squad.

In the Merrimack Valley Conference, Central Catholic has seniors Lilly Phillips, McKenna Devanney and frosh Addie Holmes-Lavallee. Andover will also throw its hat in the ring with tough defense.

In the Middlesex League, Woburn should also be a tough out come playoff time.
