The MBTA will shut down certain line segments to do repair work for several weekends in January.

Sections of the Orange, Blue, and Red lines will be replaced by shuttle buses and other service during the weekends of Jan. 10, 24, and 31, respectively.

The Orange Line will be down from Wellington to Back Bay from Jan. 10-11, and riders won’t be able to use the Blue line between Bowdoin and the Airport from Jan. 24-25. On the Red Line, service will be suspended between Broadway and Ashmont on the Ashmont Branch, and Broadway and North Quincy on the Braintree branch from Jan. 31 to Feb. 1.

The shutdowns will allow the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority to complete Orange and Blue Line tunnel inspections.

“Proactive inspections are a critical and necessary part of maintaining the integrity of the system,” the MBTA said in a statement announcing the shutdowns.

The agency is shutting down the Red Line to upgrade and modernize signals, which will “significantly increase operational efficiency and improve scheduling reliability for riders,” according to the MBTA. While the line is down for signal work, the T will also take advantage of the closure to clean stations and repair plumbing and pump rooms. They’ll also replace windows and prepare for column work at Massachusetts Avenue Station.

The MBTA will offer free shuttle service when and where other lines can’t fill the gaps in service.

“Riders using shuttle buses should budget extra time,” the T said.

When the Red Line is shut down from Jan. 31 to Feb. 1, riders are also encouraged to use Fall River/New Bedford, Kingston, and Greenbush Commuter Rail lines instead, which will be fare free between Braintree, Quincy Center, JFK/UMass and South Station.

Commuter Rail Service

In addition to the subway shutdowns, the agency plans to shutdown several commuter rail lines to implement improvements next month.

The Needham Line will be suspended between Needham Heights and South Station from Jan. 31 to Feb. 1. Regular MBTA bus routes will replace service for the weekend. The agency will work on the West Roxbury Parkway Bridge Replacement project during the closure.

The Fitchburg, Haverhill, Lowell, and Newburyport/Rockport lines will be closed from North Station to different stops outbound — Porter, Oak Grove, Anderson/Woburn, and Swampscott — for the weekends of Jan. 3, Jan. 17 (a long, holiday weekend), and Jan. 31. The closure will allow the MBTA to work on a signal system project out of North Station. A combination of shuttle and subway service will replace the commuter rail closures.
