Patriots down eight starters in Week 17 matchup with Jets

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The Patriots are injury-ravaged on Sunday as they get set to take on the Jets.

Five starters are listed among Sunday afternoon’s inactives. The Patriots also have three starters — wide receiver Mack Hollins, left tackle Will Campbell and defensive tackle Milton Williams — on injured reserve.

There is some good news. Running back TreVeyon Henderson (concussion), wide receiver DeMario Douglas (hamstring) and cornerback Charles Woods (ankle), who were all questionable, are active.

Here’s the Patriots’ full list of inactives:

QB Tommy DeVito (emergency third QB)
WR Kayshon Boutte
LG Jared Wilson
DT Khyiris Tonga
OLB Harold Landry
LB Robert Spillane

• Boutte (concussion), Wilson (concussion), Tonga (foot), Landry (knee) and Spillane (ankle) are all starters.

• Filling in at WR for Boutte and Hollins are rookies Kyle Williams and Efton Chism. Williams has come on stronger in recent weeks as a big-play threat. Chism has yet to make his first NFL catch.

• The Patriots are only going with four WRs, so they could continue to utilize two-RB, two-TE and jumbo TE packages to compensate. FB Jack Westover (illness) was ruled questionable on Saturday. If he’s feeling better, he could see another heavy workload.

• Ben Brown, fresh off of a two-year contract extension, will fill in for Wilson at left guard. The Patriots’ backup offensive linemen are Thayer Munford Jr., Caedan Wallace and Brenden Jaimes.

• Cory Durden, Eric Gregory, Jeremiah Pharms Jr. and Leonard Taylor III will add depth behind Christian Barmore at defensive tackle. Durden was a nice find after cuts. Gregory, a rookie, has played four of the last five games. Pharms just re-signed to the 53. Taylor was cut by the Jets in October.

• Jack Gibbens, Christian Elliss and Jahlani Tavai will primarily fill in for Spillane. They must be better against the run.

• Anfernee Jennings, Elijah Ponder and Bradyn Swinson can fill in across from K’Lavon Chaisson at outside linebacker. Jennings had a sack last week. Ponder, a rookie, has three sacks on the season. Swinson, another rookie, hasn’t played on defense yet.

• CB Kobee Minor was elevated from the practice squad and could be used on special teams.
