Boston Police Blotter: Homeless man arrested for stealing 7-11 cash register

Boston police arrested a man for armed robbery after they say that he stole a cash register from a downtown 7-11 convenience store and then threatened to kill the cops.

The Boston Police Department responded to a call just after 5 a.m. Friday to 50 Summer St., the location of a 7-11 convenience store, for a radio call reporting a breaking and entering in progress. Police say that when they arrived, the front glass door to the store was shattered and the cash register was gone.

As police were speaking with a store employee they spotted a man across the street matching their suspect’s description.

“When officers attempted to place the suspect into handcuffs, he immediately began to resist and threatened to kill officers,” the BPD wrote in a statement. “After multiple de-escalation tactics, the suspect was handcuffed and the stolen merchandise was recovered.”

Michael Waterman, 40, whose address matches that of the Southampton Street Shelter in Roxbury, was arrested and charged with larceny from a building, armed robbery, breaking and entering a building in the nighttime for a felony, assault with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest, and threat to commit a crime.

Incident summary

BPD responded to 96 incidents in the 24-hour period ending at 10 a.m. Friday, according to the department’s incident log. Those included arrests for one robbery, three aggravated assaults, one residential burglary, one theft from a vehicle, two vehicle thefts, and 21 miscellaneous incidents of larceny.

All of the below-named defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

— Jose Vargas-Santos , 17 Brickford St., Jamaica Plain. Arson of dwelling house.

— Michael Waterman, 112 Southampton St., Roxbury. Armed robbery.
