Meanwhile in Whitman, firefighters prevented an outside fire from damaging a home on Christmas Day.
Whitman Fire responded to 430 Washington St., at 1:49 p.m., for a report of an outside fire that was spreading.
Upon arrival, firefighters saw that the fire had spread to a fence and a wooden deck near the two-story wood frame single-family home.
The firefighters were able to stop the flames within minutes.
Some of the exterior vinyl siding of the home had burned, but after a review, it was determined that the house was safe for the family to remain inside, and there was no interior damage or health hazards.
“This is a situation where fast response time and proper tactics played a key role in saving a family’s house in Whitman, on Christmas Day no less,” Fire Chief Timothy Clancy said in a statement.
“Our firefighters did an excellent job getting to the scene and extinguishing the fire right as it was starting to catch the house,” the chief added. “Minutes, even seconds mattered in this situation, and we are very pleased to be able to allow a family to go back into their home safely today.”
The Whitman Building Commissioner and Board of Health were notified.
The fire was investigated by the Whitman Fire Department, and the cause of the fire was determined to be accidental.
