Police Blotter: Fatal vehicle crashes, car chase

A 26-year-old Brockton man allegedly killed one person and injured another with his vehicle during police chase in Stoughton Saturday morning.

Jason Ortiz was arrested and charged with motor vehicle homicide, leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, leaving the scene of an accident with personal injury, leaving the scene of an accident with property damage, and failing to stop for police.

Around 10:40 a.m., Brockton Police tried to stop Ortiz’s pickup truck and pursued his vehicle into Stoughton when he refused to stop, according to the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office.

Stoughton Police said they were aware of the chase and that their dispatchers began hearing reports of a vehicle driving erratically and evading police. “Officers responded to the area to search for it, but were never actively engaged in the pursuit,” Stoughton Police Chief Donna McNamara said in a statement.

Shortly after the pursuit began, Ortiz allegedly crashed into a sedan at the intersection of Pleasant and Prospects Streets.

An 84-year-old man was pronounced dead at a local hospital after the crash, and a 78-year old woman was taken to a Boston hospital with serious injuries.

Police said Ortiz and another person in the same vehicle fled the scene but were eventually located by police.

Ortiz is scheduled to be arraigned at Stoughton District Court on Monday.

Several agencies including the Massachusetts State Police, Stoughton Police, and Norfolk DA are all investigating the crash.
