Mike Vrabel backs Josh McDaniels, rest of Patriots coaches

Mike Vrabel backed offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and the rest of the Patriots’ coaching staff Monday morning in his weekly interview on WEEI.

Vrabel was asked specifically about his relationship with McDaniels after he called some of the Patriots’ offensive play calls “cute” after last week’s loss to the Bills.

“There is no issue with any one of our coaches and me,” Vrabel said on “The Greg Hill Show.” “If there is a problem, they know about it. We’re trying to win games. … What this coaching staff, Josh, (interim defensive coordinator) Zack (Kuhr), Stretch (vice president of football operations and strategy John Streicher), (special teams coordinator) Jeremy (Springer), what they’ve been able to accomplish. When we win, this is on our players, but our coaches have gotten a group of guys ready and it’s a blended group, and it’s a group that they try to bring together, and we’ve really done a nice job of coming together as a coaching staff and then focused on the players, and they all have different roles.

“I’m extremely happy to have every single one of them. They’re going to pick up the pieces. They’re going to figure out who’s available this week, and they’re going to get to work already on the Jets and try to give our players the best chance to pour into their players, and they’re going to do everything they’ve done. That’s Josh, included, and every one of them. That’s about all we’re going to stand here and talk about with this staff and everything else. This is a collective group, and I am excited to be a part of it.”

McDaniels has helped Drake Maye take a massive leap in the young QB’s second season and elevated the Patriots’ offense, overall.

Vrabel had never coached with McDaniels before this season, but he did play on the Patriots while McDaniels was offensive coordinator.

This is McDaniels’ third stint with the Patriots. In his previous two tenures, he helped the team to win six Super Bowls.

Vrabel mentioned the Patriots have a blended roster. They also have a blended offensive coaching staff. None of McDaniels’ assistants have previously worked with him during his stops with the Patriots, Broncos, Rams or Raiders. Some of the Patriots’ offensive assistants, including wide receivers coach Todd Downing and assistant offensive line coach Jason Houghtaling, had worked under Vrabel, however.
