Lucas: Poor old Joe needs help with library

There are solutions to Joe Biden’s failing and pathetic attempts to raise money to build a presidential library.

But just don’t listen to the political wiseguys who suggest that Biden should first hold a garage sale at his Wilmington, Delaware, home and sell his vintage 1967 Chevy Stingray or souvenir duplicates of the classified documents he used to store there.

That would be beneath the dignity of a former president, although a former vice president might be able to get away with it.

First, though, it would be great if someone could explain why every Tom, Dick, or Harry who becomes president feels the need for people to build them a costly library in the first place.

Aren’t there enough empty government buildings or libraries around to house their musty speeches, photos, thoughts and accomplishments — or lack thereof?

And speaking about costs, the Harry we referred to is President Harry S. Truman. He left the presidency and the White House without any fanfare in 1953 and drove, without Secret Service protection, back to his hometown of Independence, Missouri, with his wife Bess at his side.

After he got there, his friends and admirers built him a modest presidential library and museum. It opened in 1957 and cost $1.7 million.

Fast forward to Barack Obama, the country’s first DEI president. His 60,000-square-foot, pyramid-like presidential library and museum, like a tower of doom, wipes out Jackson Park in the South Side of Chicago. It is almost as large as Obama’s ego.

It looks like brutalist Boston City Hall on steroids and it looms over the area like the Rock of Gibraltar.

So far it has cost $850 million, but by the time it opens in 2026 the cost will soar to $1 billion or more.

Unlike Truman’s traditional library — or President Donald Trump’s White House ballroom — the Obama granite monstrosity will house a basketball court where bored visitors can play pickup hoop or shoot three pointers.

It is all made possible by private donations, something of which poor Joe Biden has been struggling with, understandably, that he is the worst president in modern U.S. history.

Which is why he is having difficulty raising any money. Even in 2024, the last year of his presidency, when he still had some clout, his library foundation did not receive any donations. Nada, zero, zilch.

The foundation was, however, seeded by $4 million left over from his inauguration stash, according to The New York Times.

That foundation is now headed by Rufus Gifford, a longtime Obama fundraiser and former ambassador to Denmark, with Massachusetts roots. Gifford ran unsuccessfully for Congress in the Lowell-dominated 3rd Congressional District in 2018.

One way Gifford could help Biden would be to get Obama to come to his aid. While it would be out of the question for Obama to bail out Joe financially, he could offer Joe some space for his library — say, 1,000 square feet — in the basement of his mausoleum.

Biden did, after all, serve as Obama’s loyal vice president for eight years, which should count for something.

Another potential solution might be for Biden and Gifford to put together a plan to seek donations from the illegal immigrant community.

Outside of the precipitous, disastrous, and deadly abandonment of Afghanistan, which cost the lives of 13 American soldiers, Biden’s other main accomplishment as president was to open the borders.

Biden waved in some 20 million (nobody really knows) illegal immigrants from around the world into the country. Despite efforts by Trump and ICE to arrest and deport “the worst of the worst,” millions of them are still here.

Getting creative, Biden could tap into the illegal immigrant community for donations, say a modest $10 a head.  That alone would bring in $200 million. In return, they would get a free pass to his library, as they did to the country,  and ensure that at least someone would show up.

They owe Joe.
