Patriots postseason award favorite still focusing more on team success

FOXBORO — TreVeyon Henderson’s early-season struggles are far behind him at this point.

After another eye-opening performance Week 15 against the Bills in which he carried the ball 14 times for 148 yards with two 50-plus-yard touchdowns, Henderson is now the betting favorite to win the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year award.

Henderson’s focus remains on winning football games, however.

“Honestly, I just want to continue to focus on just trying to win with this team,” Henderson said Wednesday. “I don’t really focus on personal accomplishments or things like that, and that’s something that the Lord really helped me out. It’s just like, man, just put the team before myself. And so that’s something I’m just going to try to continue to focus on doing. And at the end of the day, if I end up winning that award, man, praise God. But if I don’t, I just want to continue to win games. That’s what’s more important to me.”

Henderson now has 143 carries this season for 773 yards with seven touchdowns. He’s also added 34 catches for 212 yards with one score.

The rookie Ohio State product believes he’s made the biggest strides with his decisiveness this season.

“That’s something that was kind of hard just transitioning to from the preseason to regular season,” Henderson said. “But honestly, once I see a crease, just learning how to hit it and make a full-speed decision.”

He did that multiple times in Sunday’s loss with 52- and 65-yard touchdown runs. On the 65-yarder, he reversed field and turned a broken play into what was then a go-ahead score.

The 2025 second-round pick received some help from his quarterback, Drake Maye, who was running out in front of him as a lead blocker.

“Honestly, it was just an instinct during those moments,” Henderson said. “Just trying to make a play, knowing we was down. I appreciate Drake for his effort on that play. It shows a lot about the type of quarterback we got on this team.”

The Patriots haven’t had a big-play threat like Henderson on their roster in a very long time. Defenses now must be aware that Henderson is a scoring threat every time he touches the ball.
