Woman found fatally shot in her St. Paul apartment is identified

A woman found fatally shot in her St. Paul apartment last week was a “devoted mother” of five children who “witnessed the unthinkable,” according to her sister.

Police said Monday they continue to look for the suspect in the killing of Shaniya D. Thompson, of St. Paul. The man and Thompson were in a relationship, a police spokesperson said Friday.

The man and Thompson had children together, her sister wrote on GoFundMe (gofund.me/9d6734aac).

“He came into her home bearing gifts for my young nieces birthday,” Thompson’s sister wrote. “All the while planning to shoot and kill my sister, while my nieces and nephews were there.”

Officers responded about 4:15 p.m. Friday to an apartment building in the 500 block of Broadway Street, which is near downtown and close to Interstates 94/35E and East Seventh Street.

Thompson, who had been shot in her head, was found by police in her apartment. Preliminary evidence indicated she was shot Thursday.
