After putting forth a dominant performance in primetime star edge rusher Jonathan Greenard will not play again this season. He aggravated a lingering shoulder injury on Sunday night at AT&T Stadium and will have surgery to get it fixed.

This is something Greenard has been dealing with for much of this season. He missed games against the Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers last month before returning to the field and playing through the pain.

Asked about the toughness Greenard exemplified along the way, head coach Kevin O’Connell lauded him for his leadership.

“He was not going to be denied when he got his strength and got what he needed to be cleared to play,” O’Connell said. “He knew he would not be able to put this behind him until probably he could get it fixed whenever that was going to be.”

The way that Greenard played for the Vikings in the 34-26 win over the Dallas Cowboys was a good way for him to go out. He a generated seemingly constant pressure on veteran quarterback Dak Prescott, bringing him down for a sack once in the process.

The impressive showing from Greenard on national television earned him a grade of 90.5, according to Pro Football Focus, which speaks to how disruptive he was throughout the game. He finishes this season with 38 tackles, 3 sacks, and 12 quarterback hits across 12 games.

“I’m just so proud of him,” O’Connell said. “I know he’ll get it fixed and be ready to rock and roll.”

In the absence of Greenard, young edge rusher Dallas Turner will get more opportunities moving forward, which could prove to be instrumental for his development.
