Saturday’s high school roundup/scores: Westford’s Hennessy runs to fifth at national race

Westford Academy senior Abigail Hennessy ran to fifth place at the Brooks Cross Country Nationals against a star-studded field at Balboa Park in San Diego, Calif.

Hennessy finished in 17 minutes, 21.9 seconds. Michigan’s Natasza Dudek won the girls race in 16:55.7. Hennessy was running in the lead pack until about halfway through the race, but then fell slightly off the pace.

The event brought together the top 10 runners from four regional meets (Midwest, South, Northeast, West), plus 10 “Golden Ticket” winners per gender. A total of 52 girls competed.

Boys hockey

Cam Petrillo scored three times as Arlington rolled over Middlesex League opponent Wilmington, 9-1. … Sophomore Gabe Kioumejian netted all four goals as Belmont won 4-1 over Watertown/Wayland.

In a nonleague game, Andre Rosales scored a pair as Essex Tech defeated Bedford, 6-2. … Aidan St. Pierre had two tallies as St. Mary’s of Lynn defeated Westford Academy 7-1.

Girls hockey

In Bay State Conference action, Hadley Benson scored twice, including her first varsity goal, while Ava Landry added a pair of goals to lead Dedham past Norwood, 5-2.

In nonleague play, Charlotte Paul had a hat trick as Plymouth (1-0) took down Falmouth 5-2. … In the Middlesex League, Grace Monahan scored twice as Winchester defeated Stoneham, 7-2. … In the MVC/DCL, Sammy Ryan had a goal and an assist as Methuen/Tewksbury (1-0) blanked Westford Academy 2-0.

Boys basketball

Ayden Valentin dropped 38 points with six steals as Dartmouth topped nonleague opponent Sharon 62-53. … Dennis Lynch netted 27 points with six boards as Boston Latin (2-0) defeated Tech Boston 71-61.
