Report: Top free agent expected to meet with Red Sox, other suitors Tuesday

Free agent slugger Pete Alonso has been linked to the Red Sox ever since the offseason began. The two seem like a perfect match, as Boston needs a big bat and the longtime New York Mets slugger is among the best on the market.

Now the two will reportedly meet face to face.

According to Mike Puma of the New York Post, Alonso is traveling to Orlando on Tuesday to meet with interested teams at the Winter Meetings. The Red Sox are among the teams expected to sit down with the slugger, a list that Puma says also includes the Baltimore Orioles.

Alonso has been among the most prolific power hitters in baseball over the past half decade, hitting 264 home runs over seven seasons since his debut in 2019. That ranks third in MLB over that stretch, behind only Yankees great Aaron Judge (285) and fellow free agent Kyle Schwarber (268), another potential Red Sox target.

The 31-year-old first baseman is coming off another standout season in which he batted .272 with 38 home runs, 126 RBI, an .871 OPS and 3.4 wins above replacement. Alonso has never hit fewer than 34 home runs in a 162-game season and this past season earned his fifth All-Star nod and his first career Silver Slugger.

Alonso is seeking a long-term contract after failing to secure one last winter in his first foray as a free agent. The slugger instead signed a two-year, $54 million deal with an opt out after the first season to return to the Mets, and he exercised that opt out to hit the market again following the season.

Besides seeking a proven power hitter, the Red Sox could also use additional right-handed bats and certainty at the first base position. Triston Casas, the club’s presumed starter, has battled major injuries in each of the past two seasons and is still working his way back from a season-ending knee injury suffered last May.

Casas is expected to be ready for spring training, but Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow has so far declined to commit to Casas or anyone else as the club’s starter at first.
