Jeff Kinney’s back with ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw’

Jeff Kinney, after creating, writing and extending his “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” series of books, animated films and stories, is not done yet.

Yes, Friday’s Disney+ animated feature is called “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw” but it is certainly not, Kinney, 54, acknowledged with a smile in a virtual interview, the last of anything.

“I like the title because it’s the last straw between Greg and his father who’s threatening to send him to this military academy. So ‘the last straw’ is the last thing that Greg does to confirm his father’s conviction of sending him away.”

Is that semi-autobiographical, the threat of being sent away?

“I did get sent to an all-boys Catholic high school but I don’t think that was quite the same as a military academy.

“It was my cousin who actually got sent to a military academy. And every single day he wrote a letter home that just said, ‘Help get me out of here.’ Which I thought was hilarious.

“That definitely was the spark for this. But it’s definitely not the series’ end which I’m learning now is the impression that was given in the title.

“We’re just getting started, especially with the films.”

The Wimpy film series began with four live-action films from 2010 to 2017. Since 2020 it’s been animated. Why?

“Lots of different reasons. The biggest is Disney+ came into existence and wanted to make movies based on properties they owned. I was thrilled to death.”

As creator and author, Kinney released his 20th Wimpy book just weeks ago. “I’m working on my 21st right now and I’m also the screenwriter and producer on these films. My plate is very full but in a good way.”

As to why has Greg Heffley, the Wimpy Kid, endured?

“I think kids can see themselves in these characters. My books are like a mirror to kids’ lives. Greg’s interesting because he’s not heroic or aspirational. He’s full of imperfections.

“Those imperfections are what make him appealing. Because we can see a little of ourselves in Greg. And he’s funny — he helps us laugh at our own circumstances.”

Kinney is more than the mighty Wimpy. Based in Plainville, “Five miles south of Gillette Stadium, we’re developing the center of our town. We’ve got a bookstore that’s been there 10 years now. The best authors in the world come there. A few weeks ago we had M. Night Shyamalan. David Baldacci. Michael Connelly. We always have somebody of consequence.

“In the bookstore, I work in the studio on the top floor. So it’s really a fun life. I never run out of things to do, that’s for sure.’
