Catholic Memorial runs over BC High despite trailing early

DORCHESTER — Gillette Stadium-bound Catholic Memorial took down BC High, 48-27. in its annual Thanksgiving clash behind a stellar performance from senior quarterback Kise Flannery.

The struggling Eagles (4-6) had everything to play for in their 63rd Thanksgiving Day game against Super Bowl-bound Catholic Memorial (9-2) at James Cotter Field.

Second-year coach Paul Zukauskas’ squad came out strong against the Knights; after a three and out, they got a quick rushing touchdown by sophomore tailback Isaiah Christian. The Knights were then forced to punt from their own 1 and Jordan Devine blocked it and scored to make it 14-0 Eagles.

The tide turned for the rest of the game as on the first play of the next drive, as Harvard-bound Flannery, who is also a former BC High quarterback, burst through the Eagles D-Line for a 70-yard rushing touchdown.

The Eagles’ offense had one last punch before it was all CM. BC High drove down the field and capitalized with Noah Federico taking the pitch from Francesco Fautz and tossing it over the CM line to Matt Halloran to make it 20-7 Eagles.

After that, it was all Catholic Memorial.

Once again, Flannery scrambled his way through the Eagles defense for a 26-yard rushing touchdown as the Knights clawed their way towards cutting the lead. The CM defense was all over the Eagles as they couldn’t move the ball behind the pressure from Boston College-bound defensive lineman Mac Fitzgerald and the shutdown secondary in Jaiden Johnson and Jackson Tucker.

The Knights took the ball and didn’t look back with a rushing touchdown from Christian Simmons. Eagles got the ball back, but not for long with a forced fumble by another former Eagle in David Ramsdell. Flannery ran his way down to the 1 and Simmons punched it in to make it a 28-20 lead at the half.

Dibiaso’s squad received the ball to start the second half and kept on rolling. Flannery dumped a screen pass to backup QB and BC commit Ramar Thomas who took it 64 yards to the house to extend the CM lead.

The Eagles struggled to move the ball against the continuing pressure from Fitzgerald and strongholds Liam Conlon and Orion Fernandez.

The pounding ensued even more with a touchdown from senior halfback Ibrahim Kaba and a bomb caught by Ramar Thomas to close out the game.

“When we were down multiple scores to start it didn’t matter, we took it one play at a time and didn’t look back,” Flannery said. “I didn’t let the emotions of playing against some of my best friends from middle school get in the way, I trust our guys. Now onto the big stage against Feehan.”

The Knights will finish their season against the No. 2 seed Bishop Feehan at Gillette Stadium for the Div. 2 title at 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 6.
