Boston Police warn residents to watch out for roofies this Thanksgiving
Boston Police are cautioning residents to watch their drinks this Thanksgiving.
The department issued a warning about spiked beverages ahead of the holiday, saying in a statement that, “police would like to remind the public of the dangerousness of colorless, odorless, and tasteless drugs.” Common spiking drugs including Rohypnol, also known as roofies, GHB, and Ketamine can be covertly placed in drinks causing disorientation, confusion, even temporary paralysis and unconsciousness in those who have been drugged.
The state of Massachusetts and BPD have issued several warning about spiked drinks in recent years.
The issue has become so prevalent that earlier this week, American Pie-star Tara Reid said she’d been knocked unconscious after being drugged in a Chicago bar over the weekend.
Reid told TMZ that she had ordered a drink at the hotel bar — she did not name the hotel — and left it to smoke a cigarette outdoors. Upon returning to the bar, Reid said she saw a napkin placed on top of her drink. Though she found that odd, she proceeded to drink it.
“Before I knew it, I was in the hospital eight hours later,” she said.
Reid said she was grateful that she was in a public space when she blacked out, expressing her concerns about being sexually assaulted if she had been in a private space instead.
“I don’t know what that stuff was, but whatever it is it knocked me out immediately,” she said.
To stay safe, BPD advised only drinking something served directly from a bartender or server. They also suggested avoiding accepting drinks from strangers.
“Keep your drink in sight at all times,” the advisory noted. “Never leave it unattended.”
In addition to keeping drinks covered, police say that drink testing tools can reveal whether a beverage has been tampered with.
If a resident believes they or someone else has been drugged, they should report it to police immediately.
