Herald Sweet 16: Teams one victory away from state title game
Then there were 32. That is the number of teams remaining in the hunt for MIAA Super Bowl titles. Each has had a long journey to reach the semifinals, and some are in a better position than others to accomplish their ultimate goal.
Programs like St. John’s Prep have been dealing with the injury bug, but keep on winning with epic performances. Others like Duxbury have caught fire at precisely the right time, and appear poised to exert more damage. Regardless, each school only needs one more victory to reach Gillette.
1. St. John’s Prep: Despite trailing midway through their Div. 1 quarterfinal bout with Leominster, the top-ranked Eagles (10-0) came back to life in a 48-32 win. Maxwell Parent had a game for the ages (355 yards rushing, five touchdowns), and will look to carry that momentum into a semifinal matchup with No. 5 Central Catholic.
2. Springfield Central: After a shaky start to the Div. 1 playoffs, the Golden Eagles (9-1) returned to their dominant ways in a 49-14 romp of Lowell last week. Now they will look to punch a ticket to Gillette when they face No. 3 Xaverian for the second time this season.
3. King Philip: As many expected, the No. 1 Warriors (10-0) have been a force in Div. 3, outscoring opponents at a 93-12 clip in the playoffs. They will attempt to keep things rolling this weekend, facing a Cinderella team in No. 12 Malden Catholic.
4. Xaverian: Powered by Will Wood (four touchdown passes), the third-seeded Hawks (8-2) cruised in the Div. 1 quarterfinals with an impressive 49-17 drubbing of Andover. Locals have been clamoring for a rematch with second-ranked Springfield Central, and they will get that opportunity in the semifinals.
5. Catholic Memorial: Don’t look now, but the second-seeded Knights (7-2) are back. Harvard commit Kise Flannery (163 yards passing, 67 yards rushing, four total touchdowns) was vital during its 47-0 blanking of Wellesley in the Div. 2 quarterfinals. Can he keep it going against fourth-ranked Winchester this time around?
6. Winchester: Once again, Gianni DePrimeo (three touchdowns rushing) starred in a win for the fourth-seeded Red and Black (10-0). His performance came in a 38-21 victory over Lincoln-Sudbury. Next up will be Winchester’s toughest challenge yet – a Div. 2 semifinal contest against Catholic Memorial.
7. Tewksbury: The second-seeded Redmen (10-0) have been cruising all year long, and simply continued their torrent run with a 34-7 victory over Ashland in the Div. 4 quarterfinals. They will be challenged by a Hockomock League heavyweight in No. 4 Canton next.
8. Shawsheen: Al Costabile’s group has now won a state-high 24 games in a row, the latest coming in a convincing 28-7 victory over St. Mary’s during the Div. 5 playoffs. The top-seeded Rams (10-0) will face a streaking team in No. 5 North Reading, which is coming off a dramatic 21-20 upset of Medfield.
9. Bishop Feehan: The No. 2 Shamrocks (8-1) capitalized on their bye week to the Div. 2 quarterfinals, coasting to a 33-12 victory over Chelmsford. Coming up on the docket is a clash with third-seeded Bridgewater-Raynham.
10. Archbishop Williams: In a dramatic battle that came down to the final seconds, Hudson Garrity (247 yards, four touchdowns passing) propelled the No. 6 Bishops (10-0) to a wild 28-26 win over Hanover. A victory over second-ranked Foxboro this week would be truly impressive.
11. Scituate: Pomona-Pitzer commit Jonny Donovan shattered the program record for touchdowns (51 overall) last week as the top-seeded Sailors (9-1) held on for a 34-28 win over Walpole. Now they will look to clinch a trip to Gillette for the fourth time in five seasons when they battle a longtime nemesis in No. 4 Duxbury.
12. Milton: Patrick Collins (385 yards passing, five total touchdowns) saved his best for the playoffs, leading the No. 3 Wildcats (9-1) during a 41-27 shootout win over Masconomet in the Div. 3 quarters. He and his teammates will battle the reigning champion with No. 7 North Attleboro scheduled for the semifinals.
13. Amesbury: Time to welcome the Redhawks (10-0) to the Sweet 16. Last week, Connor Scialdone erupted offensively (138 yards, three touchdowns rushing) to key No. 2 Amesbury during an eye-opening 34-13 win over No. 7 Uxbridge in Div. 7 play.
14. Foxboro: As many Div. 5 fans anticipated, the second-ranked Warriors (8-2) have been a force to be reckoned with. A tough opponent awaits in the semifinals with No. 6 Archbishop Williams. With a victory, Foxboro would return to a state final for the third straight season, in its home community no less.
15. Central Catholic: Things got scary for a minute as the No. 5 Raiders watched their early 14-0 lead wilt against Natick last week in the Div. 1 quarterfinals. However, Caden Smith came through in the clutch with a pair of touchdowns rushing, including the game-winner in overtime (20-17 victory). Can he and his group pull off an upset against No. 1 St. John’s Prep?
16. North Attleboro: If you thought the seventh-seeded Rocketeers (8-2) would fade away after last year’s Div. 3 Super Bowl win, think again. Frankie Strachan (190 yards, three touchdowns rushing) led them to their biggest win of the year in the quarterfinals, as North Attleboro pulled away for a stunning 42-21 rout of second-ranked Barnstable.
On the sideline: Duxbury, Bridgewater-Raynham, Randolph, Canton, North Reading, Cohasset, Hudson, Nashoba Tech, Fairhaven
