FOXBORO — The Patriots signed rookie outside linebacker Bradyn Swinson off of the practice squad when they placed defensive tackle Milton Williams on injured reserve.

Head coach Mike Vrabel said “some of that” decision was to protect him from getting signed by another team.

“It’s also about opportunity, when we feel like they’re ready for it and when they’ve earned it,” Vrabel said. “And, in that case, I think Bradyn has. So, we’ll have to evaluate what he can do, how he can help us and get him ready to go.”

Swinson, a fifth-round pick out of LSU, was a surprise cut in August. He has yet to make his NFL debut.

The rookie edge defender enters the roster behind Harold Landry III, K’Lavon Chaisson, Anfernee Jennings, Elijah Ponder and Caleb Murphy on the depth chart. The Patriots dealt Keion White last month at the NFL trade deadline.

“He’s worked hard. He’s improved,” Vrabel said of Swinson. “I think he’s worked hard in the weight room, changing his body, getting stronger, learning special teams and doing a good job there. Give us a great look, and those coaches have done a great job of improving a lot of those guys and hopefully getting them ready here for when they have to play.”

Swinson was one of the most productive pass rushers in college football last season, generating 60 total pressures with the Tigers. The Patriots’ pass rush could use a jolt of athleticism, especially now with Williams out.
