The Volvo EX40 ends the month just 6 sales off the top spot.

The Norwegian new car market is off -3.6% year-on-year in October to 11,138 units, but the year-to-date tally remains in frank positive at +20.4% to 124,463. BEVs hold 97.4% of the market thanks to 10,852 sales, stable year-on-year. That’s to be compared with 94% a year ago. Year-to-date BEV share is 95.2% vs. 88.8% over the same period in 2024. Meanwhile PHEVs are at 1% for the month, diesel at 1.1%, petrol at 0.3% and HEVs at 0.2%. Local media call this month “the calm before the storm”. As the 25% VAT ceiling for electric cars is about to go down from NOK 500,000 to NOK 300,000 from January 1st , there will be a rush to purchase BEVs before the end of the year. The price of petrol and diesel will also increase, so it’ll be a very interesting two months to follow.

In the brands ranking, Volkswagen (+3%) is back on top for the 2nd time in the past 4 months, followed by surging Volvo (+60%) and BMW (+39.3%). In contrast Tesla (-50.2%) and Skoda (-30.3%) both implode. Tesla remains by far the most popular carmaker in the country year-to-date with 18% share. Ford (-0.5%) is stable at #6 above Mercedes (+17.2%) and Audi (-26%). Below Hyundai (+0.9%), MG (+1168.6%) shoots up to #10 vs. #13 year-to-date. BYD (+16%) and Xpeng (+55.4%) are also up, with Chinese carmakers accounting for 17.1% of the market vs. 13% in September. Mazda (+357.1%) and Kia (+230.4%) stun.

Model-wise, the Tesla Model Y (-8.2%) keeps its crown, just 6 sales above the Volvo EX40 (+125.4%) and 7 above the VW ID.7 (+31.8%). The VW ID.4 (-29%) suffers at #4, distancing the Volvo EX30 (+14.4%). Two newcomers follow: the BYD Sealion 7 at #6 and the Skoda Elroq at #7. The Xpeng G6 (+102.4%) breaks into the Norwegian Top 10 for the first time at #9, with the BMW i4 (+57.1%) and iX1 (+74.9%) also impressive. The new Mazda 6e is an instant success at #12 for its 4th month of sale in the country.
