Walpole shuts out Andover to advance to field hockey semifinals

WALPOLE — It’s not quite a tiebreaker at this stage of the state tournament, but round five belongs to Walpole.

After meeting each other in the previous four Div. 1 state finals, where they traded repeat titles, the top-seeded Porkers (19-1-1) powered through a 5-0 Div. 1 state quarterfinal win over fellow perennial juggernaut No. 8 Andover on Saturday to return to the Final Four for a fifth straight year.

Walpole matches up with No. 5 Winchester in the Div. 1 state semifinals next — also a rematch from last year.

“I feel like this was kind of a different feeling because we usually play them in the state championship,” said senior Kendal Cusack. “But we still played like we would usually in the state championship. … We just put everything out there, right from the start. Tried to put the ball in the back of the net early, and played as a team.”

Cusack (goal, assist) scored the first of three second-quarter goals the two-time defending state champions used to put the Golden Warriors (17-2-2) in a sizable hole by the half that they couldn’t rally from.

Senior Kate Schneider scored the other two goals, and senior Emily Hagan dished three assists despite a stellar showing in net from Andover junior Rayna Cozzaglio (12 saves).

For 20 seniors, beating their chief Div. 1 competition over the years in their final home game was “surreal.” For head coach Jen Quinn, though, it was just meaningful to get the job done against a program like Andover.

The last time the Golden Warriors were denied the Final Four was in 2018.

“Andover is a great team, and they’re a great program,” Quinn said. “It just says something to beat a quality team. It just says something about us, but it also is about them. They get really far in the tournament every single year.”

Andover did well to stave off the Porkers in the first quarter despite heavy offensive pressure.

Cozzaglio notched three saves, while Shannon Paul and Molly Ulrich played steady inside the defensive 25 to keep Walpole off the scoreboard. The Golden Warriors drew a corner for the potential to steal an early lead, and they showed against Uxbridge in the regular season (3-0 loss) an ability to load up on defense if they executed on it.

But Walpole’s speed out of the cage, and all over the field, kept Andover off the scoreboard. And after numerous trips into the attacking 25, the Porkers finally grabbed a 1-0 lead with 6:02 left in the half.

Hagan’s initial shot on a corner was deflected to the left wing, and Cusack bursted to the loose ball to flick it in.

“I just knew right away I needed to get it in the back of the net,” Cusack said.

Momentum is often Walpole’s greatest weapon.

A great send along the end line from Hagan was tipped up and in by Schneider just 1:17 later, and Schneider tallied another in the last few minutes of the half for a 3-0 lead.

“The first half, we were on fire, they played so well,” Quinn said. “They don’t ever want to stop. … We look for that tenacity and that never quit. And it was there today.”

“All we want to do is just keep going, keep going, keep going,” Cusack added. “We have so much energy. … We really went for it.”

Andover limited the pressure in the third quarter by keeping Walpole mostly outside of the circle, but struggled to advance into the attacking 25 for a rally. Avery Pitts, Ulrich, Paul and Caroline Vaughan each started breakouts into the attack, only for Grace Hagan, Ella Dacey and Nadia Michienzi to cut them off with clean tackles and strong sends back up field.

Andover finished with two shots on goal and four corners.

Seniors Emily Dunn and Kaylee Walsh added the two other goals in the second half.
