Wisconsin State Boys Soccer: Hudson rallies twice but falls short of final
MILWAUKEE — After coming from behind twice, Hudson finally ran out of rallies.
The third-seeded Raiders’ magical season came to a close with a 4-2 loss on penalty kicks after a 3-3 tie with longtime nemesis Milwaukee Marquette on Thursday in the Division 1 semifinals of the Wisconsin state boys soccer tournament.

“We thought this was the year we could beat anybody, and anybody could come beat us at state, but it was open,” said Hudson coach Steve Sollom. “We really thought this could be our year to get to the championship and maybe even win it. So, that is hard.”
“We don’t have many years that we think we’re the best team in the state, but we kind of thought we were,” he added.
Hudson, which entered 20-0-2, overcame an early two-goal deficit to force overtime, then rallied again in the second 10-minute overtime for a 3-3 tie and force the shootout.
Jack Poole and Will Cook scored in the shootout to keep the Raiders even at 2-2 after three rounds.
Marquette’s Ivan Hooshmand then scored top middle over goalkeeper Parker Streumke, and Hudson’s Calvin Lessard was turned away on a shot inside the right post. Tariq Khan then slotted the clincher for the Hilltoppers.
Marquette advanced to Saturday’s championship match against fourth-seeded Madison West, which upset top-seeded Brookfield East, 2-1, in the opening semifinal.
The loss was Hudson’s fifth to Marquette in state tournament play, including a 1-0 defeat in the 2021 title game.
“I’m really proud that we battled back,” Sollom said. “Teams don’t come back from 2-0 against a team like Marquette. We battled back, got it tied. Gave up another goal and most teams at that point are like, ‘Well, we had our chances,’ but we came back and tied it a second time.”
After a 2-2 tie at the end of regulation, Marquette took a 3-2 lead in the sixth minute of the second overtime when Kahn somehow snuck a shot from about 40 yards under the crossbar.
One minute later, Marquette was called for a penalty in the box, and Lessard tied it with a penalty kick into the upper-right corner.
“I’m thinking, we’re going to win the shootout, so let’s play for the tie,” Sollom said. “So, we dropped a few better guys back and said we’re going to play the last five minutes for a tie, and then take our chances on penalty kicks. Obviously now I wish maybe we’d tried to score, but they don’t give up many chances. And, we were exhausted. Guys gave it everything they had.”
Marquette took a 2-0 lead with a pair of goals four minutes apart midway through the first half.
Junior forward Diego Vega picked an opportune time for his first goal of the season, bringing Hudson within 2-1 in the 35th minute on a pass from Sam Olson.
Poole brought Hudson even in the 56th minute when Marquette was called for a handball and Poole drove the penalty kick into the lower left corner.
It was the second consecutive shootout match for Hudson, which outscored Hortonville 5-4 on penalty kicks after a 2-2 tie in the sectional final.
Sollum thought the consecutive shootouts gave the Hilltoppers an edge.
“It was unfortunate because we just had a penalty-kicks shootout last game. So, they watched a lot of film,” Sollum said. “Their coaches were pointing, ‘Go this way, go this way.’ I was trying to decide, do we tell the kids to go the opposite way, or do what they’re comfortable doing?
“Some did each, but it was a little awkward just knowing in their heads, does the goalie know that I know that he knows? Then you get some second guessing the most important kick of your life.”
