Report: Red Sox shortstop opting in to final two years of deal

Trevor Story isn’t going anywhere.

According to multiple reports, including MassLive’s Chris Cotillo and ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the Red Sox’s starting shortstop has decided not to opt out of his contract and will play out the remaining two years of his deal.

The decision ensures some measure of continuity for the Red Sox infield, which faces significant questions with Alex Bregman having already opted out and possible holes at both first and second base.

Story originally signed with the Red Sox on a six-year, $140 million deal prior to the 2022 season. His first three years in Boston were plagued by injuries, but last year marked a return to form for the two-time All-Star, who hit .263 with 25 home runs, 96 RBI and 31 stolen bases while appearing in 157 games.

Story played especially well over the final four months, batting .289 with an .827 OPS from June 1 onwards.

As part of his deal Story had the option to opt out after 2025, though the Red Sox could have prevented him from becoming a free agent by picking up a club option for 2028. Story would have had some incentive to opt out, as he would have either landed a longer deal from the Red Sox or given himself the opportunity to hit the free agent market coming off a strong season.

Instead Story appears to have prioritized stability, as he can now go into 2026 certain that he’ll remain one of the leaders of a team that looks poised to contend for a World Series championship.
