Massachusetts man, 81, charged in crash that killed 18-year-old

An 81-year-old man is accused of driving on the wrong side of the road and slamming into a car, killing an 18-year-old and injuring 3 others.

Reading man Laurence Hayes was arraigned on Tuesday in connection to the Gloucester crash last month on the A. Piatt Andrew Bridge on Route 128.

Hayes was driving his Honda CRV northbound in a southbound lane when his vehicle struck a Toyota Corolla traveling southbound at about 1:30 a.m. on June 30.

The Corolla was being driven by a 19-year-old woman, and the car also had another 19-year-old female passenger and two 18-year-old male passengers.

All individuals involved in the crash were transported to area hospitals.

One of the passengers in the Corolla — Christopher Dailey, 18, of Gloucester — died on July 4 as a result of the severe injuries from the crash.

The other three teens in the Corolla were also Gloucester residents.

Gloucester Police and Fire responded to the crash.

In addition to the Essex DA’s office, the incident is under investigation by the Mass State Police Troop A detectives, MSP Danvers, MSP Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, MSP Crime Scene Services Section, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
