Stephanie Beatriz buckles up for ‘Twisted Metal’ S2

As “Twisted Metal,” the Peacock series inspired by Sony’s videogame, careens towards a 3-episode launch Wednesday to its second season, Stephanie Beatriz took a look back.

Beatriz’s Quiet costars with Anthony Mackie’s John Doe in the post-apocalyptic wasteland that is the series’ setting.

“In the first season especially, I was fascinated by what (showrunner) Michael Jonathan Smith did,” Beatriz, 44, said. “He created this world in which the dichotomy between the people that have access to things – like safety, food and healthcare – is so vastly different than the people outside the city walls.

“They are caught in this No Man’s Land fighting for their life at every turn.  Also, we see that people inside the walls also take advantage of people who also are inside the walls with them – that interests me too.”

For her character Quiet and her brother Loud, “They were promised this paradise. If they become indentured servants for something like four years! What they don’t know is that they’re signing away their lives to be essentially enslaved. To escape, they go on this wild journey.

“What follows is all kinds of backstory and world building with the divided States of America and who the law enforcement is. And how John Doe fits in as a milkman, with his loneliness and his deliveries between cities. And his driving ability!

“All of that stuff created this very fleshed-out, clear world where your ethics and values made you who you were. But they also were in this gray space of needing to survive from moment to moment and having to do what was needed to do to get to the next day.”

As for who exactly eerily named Quiet is, “In the beginning in S1, she’s seeking revenge for the death of her brother. Once that revenge story is completed, she’s thinking to herself, ‘Who am I in this world?’

“At the end of S1, she becomes this Robin Hood character who’s starting to figure out that she can steal from the rich and give to the poor to maybe make things a little more equal.

“But she also gets captured by the Dolls at the end of S1. The Dolls just so happen to be led by Doll Face – who just so happens to be John Doe’s sister.

“Now, in S2, we see that Quiet has established a community within the Dolls. She might even have been dating some of them.

‘We see she still is after what she wanted in S1: A little more equality for everybody. She also wants to enter the tournament and win. So that all the walls can come down everywhere.

“I think it’s going to be a really interesting ride.”
