Patriots rookie class feeling fortunate for veteran free-agent addition

FOXBORO — Morgan Moses’ value for the Patriots this season extends past what he can do on the field, likely locking down the right side of the offensive line.

Moses, a free-agent addition, has been the consummate veteran leader, staying after practice to work with Patriots rookie and young offensive linemen.

Rookies Will Campbell and Jared Wilson, especially, feel fortunate to have Moses in their corner.

“I mean, if you could be over there in our little huddle after practice, Morgan is a man of words and wisdom,” Campbell said Saturday. “He gives so many little points that can take you as far as you want. He’s been very good to me on the field and off the field. One day, I hope I can be like that.”

This is Moses’ 12th year in the NFL, and he told Wilson that he plans to play three more in the NFL.

Campbell hopes to have the same longevity as his 34-year-old bookend tackle, who was selected in the third round of the NFL Draft back in 2014 by Washington.

“I ask him a lot. I’m like, ‘Man,’ even though, like, I asked him a day before, I asked him again. I’m like, ‘How are you here 12 years?’ … I asked him what he does in recovery, when he goes home and stuff like that. He sleeps a lot. He has a red light sauna on him, which, I don’t have enough money for that right now, but hopefully, God willing, I can get up to that moment. But he’s a, he’s a great teacher. He’s just a great guy.”

Moses has spent the majority of the first four days of training camp as the Patriots’ right tackle with Will Campbell at left tackle, Cole Strange at left guard, Garrett Bradbury at center and Mike Onwenu at right guard. Wilson has also subbed in for Strange and Bradbury at left guard and center.

Campbell credited Bradbury, who’s in his seventh NFL season, and Onwenu, a sixth-year vet, for their leadership, as well.

“Whenever you’re a rookie, to go into an organization with a veteran who you can lean on who has played so much ball, has so much knowledge and can teach you so much. And me, Jared, Marcus (Bryant), Jack (Conley), Mekhi (Butler), all us rookies are super fortunate to have a guy like Morgan, Big Mike, Garrett, like guys that have played a lot more football than we have. So anything that they can give us to help us take that next step is super awesome, but Morgan, he has been really good.”

While Campbell, Onwenu and Moses seem locked into their starting roles at left tackle, right guard and right tackle, there is a competition at center and left guard, and Wilson is the top candidate to replace either Bradbury or Strange.

Caedan Wallace, a 2024 third-round pick, is also in the mix at left guard. Ben Brown has been serving as the Patriots’ third-string tackle.

“We ask each other questions all the time,” Wilson said of his working relationship with Bradbury and Strange. “Like, anytime I got a question, I just go to Garrett. Garrett and Cole are very open. They don’t — there’s no, like, tension between us or anything like that, because we’re teammates at the end of the day and we want to win.”
