Bristol County DA messes up death report of victim critically injured in Fall River fire

After announcing that a tenth victim had died following Sunday night’s fire in Fall River, the Bristol County District Attorney is pulling back that statement, saying the woman is alive and remains in critical condition.

“Please be advised that due to a miscommunication with a medical agency, the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office reported the passing of Brenda Cropper as a result of the Gabriel Assisted Living Center Fire,” the office has said in a statement. “Ms. Cropper remains in critical condition at this time. The BCDAO has been in contact with Ms. Cropper’s family regarding this matter. We will provide updates when they become available.”

The development on Friday comes just a day after the DA’s office identified Cropper, 66, as the tenth fatal victim.

“The decedent, identified as 66-year-old Brenda Cropper, had been hospitalized in critical condition since Sunday’s fire,” the office stated Thursday. “Ms. Cropper succumbed to her injuries later in the day (Wednesday).”

Five men and four women initially died in the blaze that devastated the Gabriel House community last Sunday night, marking the deadliest fire in Massachusetts in over 40 years. At least 30 more were injured in the fire.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the Gabriel House provided a preliminary update stating two residents remained in critical condition, though the DA’s office only confirmed one.

The assisted-living facility housed 70 residents, many of whom needed assistance to escape during the blaze. Firefighters responded to the scene to find many residents hanging out of the windows of the three-story building, screaming for help.
