Taiwan June 2025: Peugeot 408 spectacularly storms into Top 10

First Top 10 finish in the world for the Peugeot 408.

New light vehicle sales in Taiwan disappoint again in June at -17.5% year-year to 34,320 units. This leads to a H1 2025 volume down -14.4% to 198,967. This poor result is attributed by the local specialised press to a wait-and-see attitude by car buyers amidst the continued uncertain tariff situation. Toyota (+0.4%) manages to stay stable to 28.3% share, however well below the 30.7% it commands YTD. CMC surges 32.7% to claim the 2nd spot overall for the first time since June 2021. It still ranks #3 year-to-date vs. #7 over the Full Year 2024. Mercedes (-22.6%) falls even faster than the market but is back up one spot on May to #3, as is Hyundai (-5.5%) to #4. All previous three manufacturers benefit from the slump of Lexus (-34.2%) down three ranks on last month to #5. Tesla (-56.6%) is in complete freefall at #6 with a particularly high year-ago result.

Atop the models ranking, the Toyota Corolla Cross (+65.6%) continues to dominate head and shoulders, selling almost 2.5 times the amount of the #2, an excellent new CMC J Space. The Toyota Town Ace (-21.8%) manages to stay in 3rd position, while the Tesla Model Y (-36.6%) surges back up to #4 despite a drab YoY performance. The Lexus NX (-42.2%), Honda CR-V (-38.3%), Toyota RAV4 (-26.7%) and Toyota Corolla Altis (-24.7%) all freefall but the Toyota Yaris Cross (-16.1%) resists somewhat. The big surprise of the month is the 10th place of the Peugeot 408  with 660 sales and 1.9% share, a model that has been a failure up to now. This is the largest monthly volume ever reached by a Peugeot in Taiwan, making the country the only market in the world where the 408 cracked the Top 10. The second country where the 408 has been successful is Turkiye where it reached a record #11 in Mach and October 2024.
