France June 2025: Weakest June in 28 years, Renault Group above Stellantis over H1

The Renault Clio holds 8% of its home market in June.

French new car sales endure a horrendous 13th consecutive month of year-on-year decline in June at -6.7% to 169,504 units. This is the weakest June volume in 28 years: since the 93,171 units of June 1997 which was exceptionally low, and to be compared with the 230,965 units of pre-pandemic June 2019. The H1 volume is down an equally disappointing -7.9% to just 842,203 units.

Petrol sales sink -30.7% to 37,747 units and 22.3% share vs. 30% in June 2024, diesel implodes -40% to 9,738 and 5.7% vs. 8.9% a year ago, HEVs go against the market with a splendid 19.5% YoY gain to 74,337 and 43.9% share vs. 34.2% last year, PHEVs fall -16.1% to 11,784 and 7% share vs. 7.7%. Finally BEV sales are stable at -2.4% to 29,139 and 17.2% share vs. 16.4% in June 2024. Over the First Half of 2025, Petrol is off -33.7% to 194,847 and 23.1% share vs. 32.1% over the same period in 2024, diesel drops -42.7% to 41,490 and 4.9% share vs. 7.9% last year, HEVs surge 34.1% to 376,217 and 44.7% share vs. 30.7%, PHEVs are down -33.3% to 49,149 and 5.8% share vs. 8.1% and BEVs slide -6.5% to 148,614 and 17.6% share vs. 17.4% a year ago.

The Dacia Bigster breaks into the Top 20 and helps the brand to 9.7% share.

One year ago the Renault Group (3 brands) outsold Stellantis (10 brands) for the first time in a monthly ranking, but this time it manages this feat over H1. This is thanks to sales up 2.2% to 232,428 vs. 229,674 (-11.9%) for Stellantis, and due to a particularly good June result at +5.1% vs. -8% for Stellantis. In the brands charts, Renault (-3.2%) is up to 19.3% share as the brand is traditionally stronger in end-of-quarters. Despite a +0.8% edge, Peugeot is far below at 12.8% of its home market. The shares are 18.1% and 14.7% respectively over H1. Dacia (+27.3%) is euphoric, registering the biggest gain in the Top 15 and cementing its third spot overall with 9.7% share, its highest since last August (record 10.3%). Volkswagen (-17.6%) is back above Citroen (-9.4%) while Toyota (-10.7%) repeats at #6. Skoda (+13.7%) and BMW (+4.3%) are the only additional gainers in the Top 10. Tesla limits its fall to -10%.

In the models charts, it is another sensational month for the Renault Clio (+43.1%) up to 8% share, its highest since pandemic-stricken April 2020 (11.5%). At 13,630 sales, the Clio reaches its best monthly volume since June 2020 (14,602) and sells almost twice the amount of the #2, the Dacia Sandero (+10.3%), hitting its best ranking since July 2024 when it led the market outright. The Peugeot 208 (-0.5%) is stable but falls to #3, it is down -22.8% over H1. The Peugeot 2008 (+0.5%) stays in 4th place just above its archenemy the Renault Captur (-32.2%) back up four spots on last month to #5. It is also notably back above its bigger brother the Renault Symbioz down one spot to #9. Adding Captur and Symbioz sales would place the tandem in 2nd position. The Citroen C3 IV is down to #6 above the Peugeot 3008 III and Dacia Duster III. The Tesla Model Y (+50.1%) soars back up 61 spots on last month to #10, its best ranking so far this year. Notice also the Renault 5 back up four ranks to #12 and the Dacia Bigster cracking the Top 20 for the first time at #17 (+6).

The Renault Trafic is the best-selling LCV at home over the First Half of 2025.

We now switch to our bi-annual LCV update for the French market. Over the First Half of 2025, LCV sales suffer even more than passenger cars with volumes off -11.9% to 185,449. Renault (-21.1%) is still the uncontested leader here but sees its market share thaw from 30.8% last year to 27.6% now. Peugeot (+3.6%) defies the negative market and improves from 16.7% to 19.6% share, followed by Citroen (-19.2%) and Ford (-7.6%). The best performer near the top is Toyota (+26.5%) up to #6 with Fiat (+4.1%) also in positive at #5.

Model-wise, the generation change between the Renault Master III (-84% to #18) and Master IV (landing at #7) reshuffles the charts: the Renault Trafic (-2%) takes the lead above the Kangoo (+2.6%), Peugeot Partner (-14%) and Expert (+2.5%). The Fiat Ducato (+7.8%) and Ford Transit Custom (+26%) are also strong below. The Toyota Hilux (-10%) is the most popular pickup truck at #23 ahead of the Ford Ranger (+46.6%) at #27 and the Isuzu D-Max (-32.2%) at #51.
