MBTA will offer free service the night of July 4 – here’s how it works
The MBTA will once again offer fare-free travel for Fourth of July fireworks attendees, the public transit agency announced on Monday.
The T will offer fare free service after 8:30 p.m. on July 4 for all bus, subway, ferry, Commuter Rail, and the RIDE trips.
MBTA General Manager Phil Eng said that Independence Day is the time to celebrate the history of our nation, and that taking the T this Friday is a great way to have a good time without worrying about getting home afterwards.
“Whether you’re attending parties, barbeques, or other celebrations, including Harborfest, Boston Pops, or the fireworks display over the Boston Harbor, leave the driving to us. Take the T,” Eng said.
According to the MBTA, the city’s annual fireworks display and other Independence Day activities routinely draw a million visitors to the city.
The MBTA’s subway lines will operate on a “modified Saturday schedule” until 3 p.m. on Friday, after which the T has scheduled increased service through the end of the day. The RIDE, as well as bus and Silver Line routes will be on a Sunday schedule. The Commuter Rail will run on a weekend schedule and is offering $10 all-day holiday passes for unlimited travel between zones.
The transit agency wants to remind commuter rail passengers that “the majority of the last trains of the evening will leave North Station and South Station at their advertised times between 11:30 PM and midnight,” but added that “if fireworks are delayed, trains will leave up to 30 minutes after the close of the fireworks.”
